Come across this pic tonight of a spec ops kilo Blackhawk. Thought you guys might like it. One question though?: what in the world are those white things attached to the upper part of the ESSS fairings on both sides. Never seen them on a hawk before!

Comm antennas, don't know what type though....

Jeff

Those are Iridium SatPhone antennas. Don't know precisely how they are used on the MH-60, but we use the Iridium system for data transmission on my aircraft

I wonder why they would mount antennas on a removable if needed fairing. Seems like they would put it somewhere permanent. Also, post some pics of your aircraft and the antennas . We'd like to see them! Never seen a kilo model with the IFR probe off till now.

Good eye Gino, I never even noticed that.i wonder why the doors are off? Don't see you much on here anymore it seems. Everything alright? How's Jon doin? I haven't heard from him since before he left for Blackhawk transition.

I'm still here. Busy with work, so I don't get as much time to model as I used to. I haven't done a helo in a while either.

Jon (Bernstein, I assume) is out of the Army now and at Ft Sill as the curator of the ADA Museum there.

Seems like work takes too much of everybody's time anymore. Hopefully see you complete another model or two for us to oodle at! You always did do awesome work. So did something happen to Jon for hm to leave or was it that he just wanted to?

Yeah, the mounting it a bit odd. Might be mission specific? The big plates they're on, however, are necessary to provide a sufficient ground plane for the antenna.

"My" aircraft that I work these days is the Global Hawk. Not sure pics of that are really appropriate in a helicopter forum, are they? ;)/>/>

Looks pretty cool. It is the first time I have seen a 'Hawk with the cargo/crew door removed as well. Usually theyare locked back, but not removed.

I believe that this pic was one of a series of shots of Kilo's taken in Afghanistan and posted here on ARC a year or so ago. I think they were posted in the research forum. Pretty cool pictures, do a search by the poster, I think it was "Chef" but may be wrong.

^yup, they're still there...

I wonder if they go through the cover and attach to the two fairings. Picture below is the ESSS cover removed.

Also, looks like the aux fuel tank is removed and there is a large US flag in the back of the cabin...

Take care,

Austin

This is the prototype for the AN/AWS-2 Rapid Airborne Mine Clearance System (RAMICS). The gun itself is a Mk 44 Mod 0 30mm cannon. The system was intended to be used to clear naval mines using a super-cavitating round. It was expected to have been put into service by now as of 2002, but I haven't looked at it recently and I wouldn't be surprised if it fell by the wayside along the way.

hey guys,

Hawkwrench, looks like you stumbled on a pic I took some time ago.

These guys visited the FOB I lived at for just that 1 day.

4 Blackhawks and THE Chinook...

for a better view of those comm antenna's

the one without the antenna's

IMG_1443.jpg

especially for the guys who like "things under wings"

but although slightly heavier, I only imagine, than their lesser armed counterparts, with sliding doors.

and for the guys who counted to four in the beginning of this post...

and John (11bee), before I could take some pics of the chinook, some very nice, although serious looking gentlemen asked me (you can read told, if you want) to stop taking pictures...

well gents, I hope you liked my contribution to this thread

Pete.

Hey Austin,

thanks for the comment on the pics.

I lived in that piece of the sandbox for 2 years so I got to take a lot of nice pictures.

those "beercans" that you talk about might be not so new...

took these shots in 2010.

Man o man, those are some super looking Blackhawks. Makes you want to start modeling right away. Thanks for sharing these guys. Now, I'll have to see if I can find some close up of these upgrades. ;)/>

Also noticed the MH-60L DAP has new-shaper, downswept ESSS wings too. I just recently noticed these on other DAPs. I wonder when someone will come out w/a set in resin?

Hey-

Does anyone know the history behind these new wings? Just wondering what was wrong with the old wings that they would go to the time and expense to develop new ones. What advantages do the new ones have? It would be nice if we had some better pictures of the new wings, anyone? Maybe the Navy is buying up all the old style wings for use on the MH-60S?

I would wonder whether or not the down-swept pylons are better suited to weapons mounting (or mounting of unguided weapons, as well as guided weapons) than the high-swept ones as they put the ordnance closer to the same plane as the aircraft's HUDs. I imagine aiming weapons mounted high up like they would be on the original wings would be difficult, even with a targeting computer helping to compensate for the weapons being essentially off-set. The original wings look much better suited to ferry tanks and to keeping such things out of the way of the main cabin doors.

Hmmm, perhaps. It doesn't look that much lower to me that it would make much of a difference. It would be nice to have some walkaround type pics to be able to tell more. Maybe it's just a lighter weight solution.

Thanks,

Phil
