CorsairMan
The news is a bit confusing but I work downtown... all I am hearing are sirens. Some shot(s) were fired at the War Memorial and witnesses said the shooter took off towards parliament. There are some other reports of a car jacking. Apparently Parliament is on lockdown and there is at least one "body" in the building... but no confirmation as to who it might be. martin_sam_2000
was about to post this. pretty crazy. I hear it was four shots at the cenotaph and then he ran to the parliament and there were 30 or so shots fired. that presumably includes the shooter and the police. reports say the shooter is down. 11bee
Very sad indeed. That soldier was on ceremonial duty and was completely defenseless. The US needs to take a look at what security we are providing for similar displays. I know at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier down in DC, there is nothing separating the "Old Guard" soldiers from the public and there is zero screening of the spectators. Pretty f-ing sad it's come to this.
CorsairMan
There has been nothing but conflicting reports - buildings have been on a voluntary lockdown for a couple hours now... this much I do know. the latest is that there were up to three shootings and one perpetrator has been killed. No one seems to know whether there were others involved. I'm sure this will be revised in a minute. I can say that there are people walking around downtown right now and I still hear the occasional siren. I won't waste space with linking news articles - they are likely not accurate and will be old news in a minute anyway.

bikerider
Because of my schedule this morning I did not get to my office in downtown Ottawa, and according to my coworkers, the entire downtown is still locked down. I have turned the news off, as I am just too sad to hear anymore right now. But I know my city has changed.
echolmberg
Prayin for ya, Canada Ditto. On a side note, I've never thought about this because, quite frankly, I've never HAD to in the past...but do the military sentries such as the ones at the Tomb of the Unknowns in DC carry live rounds? Are they able to defend themselves? I sure hope that they are and that they're not left out there to be sitting ducks. My prayers go out to our Canadian neighbors. We're with you. SBARC
This shooting attack follows an incident 2 days ago when a radicalized guy used his car and ran down two unarmed soldiers walking through a parking lot. Both soldiers were injured and one later died. The attack was witnessed by a local police officer that gave chase. The killer lost control of his car and it rolled over into a ditch. He exited the vehicle with a knife and was shot and killed by police. He was known to police authorities as a suspected radicalized individual. So the Ottawa attack is the second incident involving attacks against unarmed soldiers in Canada and this might be the work of a few cowardly individuals intent on following some twisted path. A very sad day indeed, but such attacks will not bend the will and determination of Canadians......we are made of much sterner stuff than that.
Joel_W
Certainly, a very sad day indeed. My sincerest sympathies to the family of the dead soldiers. Two days of violence in Canada is something that I just thought would never happen, as the United States is almost always the prime target. Joel
Joel_W
this is the latest that is being reported by our local station in Suffolk county New York: OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Police in Canada's capital are looking for another possible gunman, and perhaps two, after today's shooting in and near the country's Parliament building. They say a Canadian soldier who was standing guard at a war memorial was shot to death, and gunfire then erupted inside the nearby Parliament building. One gunman was killed. Witnesses say the soldier was gunned down by a man dressed all in black with a scarf over his face, and that the gunman then entered Parliament, where dozens of shots rang out. In all, police say, there were three shootings, all within less than a mile from each other in downtown Ottawa. The shootings happened at the war memorial, on Parliament Hill and at a nearby shopping mall.

Are they able to defend themselves? I sure hope that they are and that they're not left out there to be sitting ducks. Don't know about the way it's done in Canada but at Arlington, the guards are equipped with old-school M-14's and I doubt very much that they are issued with live rounds or even functional rifles (I could be wrong though). Even if they were, the problem is that due to the very nature of this duty (very regimented marching back and forth, eyes fixed forward, drill & ceremony stuff), there is not much of a chance that these guys are able to scan the crowd. I know there is some security is provided but the crowd is close to the soldiers and are able to come in right off the street (unless something has changed in the last few years) with no security screening. So given the prevalence of high capacity assault rifles here, someone could do a huge amount of damage before he is stopped. Anyway, as I mentioned above, it's truly a sad day today. RIP to the fallen Canadian soldier.

Eric No, We never carry live rounds on sentry. This IS our tomb of the unknown solider. You are at "rest under arms reverse". Barrel on your left toe, hands resting over the butt of the weapon head bowed down. You would be standing there for hours. Prayers for the young Corporals family in Hamilton. Flyboyf18
First off RIP Corporal. The coward who did this ran into the wrong person in the Parliament Bldg. The Sargent At Arms had a loaded weapon and had a good line of sight on him and took him out, good on ya, Sir!!! As 9-11 was a turning point primarily in the US but an eyeopener for others, this will be a turning point for Canadians! I wonder what the 'nay sayers' have to say now about sending assets to fight the terrorists?
SBARC
I wonder what the 'nay sayers' have to say now about sending assets to fight the terrorists? Quite true. I do wonder if there is talk now about rounding up the 90 or so radicalized individuals in Canada. My guess is some folks in the security services are discussing this issue. These sorts of terrorist attacks are pointless and will do nothing for their cause except weaken their cause and continue to turn the vast majority of Muslims against their cause. Even ISIS is feeling the sting about negative press regarding their killing of civilian Muslims.

Scooby
The soldier who was killed two days ago was serving with several of my friends in 438 Squadron. They describe him as a kind gentle soul. He was 2 months away from retirement. The two cowards who committed these acts, enjoy your place in hell.
hawkwrench
My thoughts and prayers go out to the soldiers families. RIP brave men, you exemplify the willingness to defend and if need be lay down your lives against all enemies- FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC!!!! I wonder if this is in any way connected to ISIS? dylan
His name was Nathan Cirillo here is a link to the facebook memorial page. My link rest in peace Nathan
AX 365
Ottawa just grew up today. I want to offer my deepest sympathies to the memory and the family of Corporal Cirillo. I would also like to offer my support to Mr. Kevin Vickers, retired member of the R.C.M.P. and current Sergeant at Arms for the House of Commons. He was instrumental in neutralizing the threat before he could make it further into the Center Block or the Library to carry out any further thoughts or plans he might have. I believe Mr. Vickers, and the other responding officers in the Center Block, saved a great many lives as a result of their actions. It was gratifying to see their training kick by running towards the gunfire while everyone else was running away. Although I am a member of the Ottawa Police Service, I can't comment further on what happened today as I worked midnights last night. I didn't learn of the tragic events as I was sleeping until my wife called me shortly after noon and told me to turn on the news. After she called, I was expecting a call back for duty but that call never came. The severity of the situation hit home for her as she works in federal building in the west end of the city that houses a significant complement of Armed Forces personnel. She was forced to endure the mandatory lock down of the building until receiving the all clear for civilians around 1530 hrs. Military personnel were forced to remain in lock down. We are resilient. Although the actions of the suspects have been more than a collective punch in the nose to our freedoms and values, I honestly believe we will get up, dust ourselves off and say, "Is that all you've got?!" Godspeed to the innocent victims of these senseless tragedies. I will refrain from posting my thoughts about the suspects. The more we speak about them, the longer it will take to heal. Ignore them. They can't hurt us anymore. Mike
