useful parts in the Italeri Tornado IDS....

Recommended Posts

Hello Folks,

Was looking at my stash to see which models to pull out and sell at the next club meeting. I have a couple 1/48 Italeri Tornado IDS kits, and while nice, it seems to have been surpassed by the new Revell kit. Are there any useful parts in the Italeri kits (ie detail parts, tanks, ordnance racks, parts to make British aircraft) that aren't in the Revell kit that would make it worth saving the Italeri kits for? I would be saving them basically to raid to improve the Revell kits that I now own. Just curious what your opinions on this might be.

Thanks in advance for your input....

Well, the new Revell kit come with all the parts to make a Tornado bomber from RAF/RSAF, AMI and Luftwaffe, all you need is good references to understand what parts you have to use for each variant, and that is not easy! There are good books about German and British Tornados but none showing the several differences between the variants used by each nation.

Actually the only part that is missing in the current Revell box is the glaze for one of the two canoe-shaped sensors that are on the belly of RAF and RSAF Tornados, Italeri kit dosn't have that glazing either, you will need to scratchbuild it or wait for the RAF variant of the Rvell new tool kit.

Actually the only parts from the Italeri kit you can use on the Revell one are those 4 bombs that can be used on a model of RAF Gr.1 Tornado, if you like them (I think they are not worth).

All the other parts are much more detailed in the Revell kit so there is no need to swap parts from Italeri.

My suggestion is: sell or build the Italeri kits you have as they are.

The isn't much aside from the lens & body for the LRMTS pod,the large aerials that are on each side of the fin,the BOZ 107 pod (Revell have got theres wrong, which is weird as the one in the 1/32 is correct) & the 1000lb bombs,

Main pylons in the new Revell IDS don't have RAF attachment points (MACE), search the forums for a detail explanation on this. Does not look to hard to scratch, or just forget about it. Snag the pig iron from ITA. kit if you prefer that loadout profile. LRMTS glass in there too, fits just fine and needed. The Hindenburgers can be sourced from the Airfix kit I believe. Cheers

Oh one more - get the Eduard resin wheels, as revells are just blobs.

None of them do no matter the make of kit.Basically whereas the German & Italian Tornado's use external screw down crutching pads to hole the store steady, ours & the RSAF Tornado's is done internally by what is called MACE (Minimum Area Crutchless Ejection).

The are three types of MACE units used on RAF jets,

SWERU (Special Weapon Ejector Release Unit) which are fitted to the center of the three stations on the outer shoulder (belly) pylon &,as the name suggests, are for carrying nukes.

HDERU (Heavy Duty Ejector Release Units) & are fitted to the front & rear weapon points on the shoulder pylons as well as the centerline pylon & also the inner wing pylons.

LDERU (Light Duty Ejector Release Unit) & are fitted to the outer wing pylons.

And the centerline pylon wasn't fitted prior to the Gulf scrap in 1991,nor caan it be fitted to the GR1A/GR4A.
