Dinky Scammel Recovery Tractor

Recommended Posts

I realize that this isn't exactly a kit, but it is a cool replica of a neat piece of ground warfare equipment! I also don't know if there IS a kit of this vehicle. Does anyone know?

This is an old Dinky Toy from the late ‘50s and into the ‘60s. Like all Dinkys it’s a really hefty toy with some neat, albeit crude, detail. Sure, it’s not as precise as a kit, but the old military Dinkys have a feel and presence all their own. Being someone who’s interested in armour, but not enough to build it, I find replicas like this are indispensable. Add to the fact that the thing is, in itself, a relic, and it’s even cooler!

For something a bit different, check it out:

Inherited my father's Dinkys (Dinkies?), and they have had a strong influence on my model-building choices. How they originally reached the United States, I don't know, but those poor toys got a lot of mileage, and it shows. I've built Tamiya's old Quad gun tractor and 25lb field gun multiple times, due to having the dinky version to play with as a little kid. (The Tamiya variety is a Canadian Ford, whereas I suspect the Dinky was a Morris tractor?) The day a 1/35 scale Saracen appears, I'm building it immediately. The recent Dragon Saladin makes me think it's in the works.

My Dad drove one of those, and a Ward la France wrecker, when he did his National Service with the British Army from 1947-49.

Accurate Armour does kits of both in 1/35, but they're over £200 each! :jaw-dropping:/>

Brings back fond memories. I had a few Dinky Toys as well as old old Matchbox when I was kid. Not near as many as I had Hot Wheels though. But boy those old metal toys from Dinky and the old metal Matchbox sure were tough and well built. My Son collects Hot Wheels and has around a 1000!! He takes very good care of them and treats them extremely well.

Thanks for posting.

Regards,

Don.

Wow!

Those are some impressive Scammels!

See what I mean about the Dinky being a bit short on detail, but definitely good on heft?!

I'm shocked there are so many who know the vehicle, actually!
