skyhawk174
Ok politics aside, I sure love the schemes the Iranians use on their various aircraft especially their navy. I have already built their P-3F and to me it looks great in that multi blue scheme. I had hoped someone would have issued a decal sheet for this many years ago but so far no luck. I even bought an extra Hasegawa Sea King in anticipation. It is coming to the point where I may just have the decals custom printed so I can get it out of my system. Here is a link to a side view artwork of what I am talking about. http://www.hsgalleries.com/gallery04/sh3dartworkuc_1.htm Maybe Caracal in a future helicopter sheet? KursadA
I looked at this a while ago, but I never found the references I would need to pull this one off. With the new 1/72 series from Dragon, one might think there is an opportunity for an international Sea King sheet or two. I have already committed to enough new releases for the remainder of the year, though. I may revisit the idea if nobody rises to the occasion by the end of Fall this year. skyhawk174
Great news Kursad, I forgot about the Dragon kit since I predominately do 1/48 subjects. I believe that Airfix is also planning on a new tool Sea King, so lots of new kits coming. I have been waiting so long I can wait further. I would think other than getting images off of the net it would be difficult to get some sort of walk around. However, having said that you never know, someone out there may have info. Personally, if I can get close, I am a happy camper. Also, perhaps to make it more interesting, the Iranian Navy also has a CH-53 painted in a similar scheme http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/056/4/4/rh_53d_iranian_navy_by_black___hawk-d5w6hof.jpg http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/056/4/4/rh_53d_iranian_navy_by_black___hawk-d5w6hof.jpg http://xairforces.net/images/country/iran/rh-53d_irina_0001.jpg
Jennings
Airfix has announced a Commando Mk.4, which is a very, very long way from a Sikorsky naval Sea King ASW bird.
Stephen
Airfix has announced a Commando Mk.4, which is a very, very long way from a Sikorsky naval Sea King ASW bird. Air fix has so far announced a Sea King Mk4 .There's nothing to suggest that they won't do other versions. I too would like an Iranian Sea King (preferably 1/48). FCM
I have the complete refferences to prepare the iranian Sea King versions of three periods, I received those from an iranian modeler friend, just waiting the chance to draw those with versions of other countries for the same sheet of FCM Decals. It is really strange that the helicopter modeller does not get more interest both from the manufacturers and the decal makers. I understand that they are not a fast mover or great sellers. I had heard that the Two Bobs sheet for the foreign Cobras did not sell all that well. I got it and it is great. I can probably guess that a new Bf 109 sheet will probably outsell a helicopter sheet 10 to 1. A business decision I am sure. Better get cracking on my Hasegawa Sea King build. At the rate I build, I should be ready when FCM produces a sheet :)
mungo1974
Would love to see a sheet covering the SH-3,RH-53D and Huey

skyhawk174
Iranian NAVY RH-53D decal in 1/72 scale. http://www.printscale.org/product_423.html Good news for the 1/72nd guys. Hopefully we will see something for the 1/48 modellers (like me). As for Print Scale, I have only used one sheet so far and I was not too happy with it. For one the accuracy was off and to top it off major markings were completely missing. The decals themselves did not seem to react to Micro Set or Sol but I did not try Mr. Mark Softner. Maybe others have had good success with Print Scale though.
Litvyak
Eeesh, Print Scale. I used their set of F-4 stencils and... well, let's say I decided instead to scrounge around for "good enough" decals from other sheets. I was not pleased, it was not a nice sheet to work with at all. Maybe they've improved since, but until I hear otherwise, I'd recommend against their decals.

tdogg
I believe it is Tim, if I'm not mistaken all the '53s they use were abandoned by the US so their numbers are small. Tony
Jennings
Not remotely true. The Imperial Iranian Navy was a customer for the H-53 in the 1970s.
tdogg
Oh I stand corrected. I thought I read they only had the one's abandoned during the raid but it was a long time ago maybe I just remembered it wrong.

Anyone know how many from the rescue mission made it into Iranian service? I know that a few were destroyed either during the raid or it's immediate aftermath. I thought only 1-2 actually were flyable.
mungo1974
Only two survived in one piece after they failed to explode. IIRC one was pressed into service with the Iranian Navy, the other was cannibalized to spare parts and the hulk was put on display.
