AK Interactive Air Series Acrylic paints

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Need a bit of help/advice about some AK Interactive paints I recently purchased. I just bought the set for US Modern Aircraft, RAF Camouflages and USAF TAC SEA Camouflage for AK's Acrylic AIR SERIES.

I have looked at their youtube videos looking for the answers to my questions but they are quite vaque in their information and more about the presentation and execution of their videos.

So my question for those who have used these AIR Series paints:

1, Do they work with Tamiya X-20A Acrylic thinners or do they only need water?

2, Do they need a little more thinning than say Tamiya, Vallejo or other paints?

3, What is the optimum ratio of paint to thinner (roughly)? I personally use a 40/60 mix for most of my paints sprayed at about 15-20psi

4, Has anyone experienced any clogging issues? I had a set of the Italeri paints and had no end of clogging issues no matter how much I mixed or thinned them.

I'm by no means a novice at this hobby as I have been doing it for several years now, just haven't looked at these paints until now and needed to top up my stock of paints so I thought I'd give them a try.

Welcome to all forms of advice on this. Thanks in advance.

Regards from New Zealand

Andrew

I haven't personally used these but I have seen (video builds) people use both Tamiya X-20A and Vallejo thinners with it. Like the AMMO line of paints, AK recommends their own thinner for optimum results though. Based on what I've seen, the do dry in the tip but, honestly, that's goes for almost all acrylic paints.

I just started using AK Interactive, Ammo, and Vallejo Model Air paints. I recommend getting some "Airbrush Flow Impover". It helps (along with the appropriate thinner) keep the paint from drying at the tip and clogging up.

One tip. Don't prime with Tamiya Fine Surface Primer. It doesn't play well with those three paints. Not sure why but I had the paint literally peel right off the primer. Use Vallejo primers.
