chomper
I have been going through my books for an upcoming Flanker project, and the more I read, the more confused I get, sort of. It appears to me that twin seat Flankers and single seaters have different vertical fins. The tops are different, and sometimes rudder length is different. Add canards and TVC and it really gets confusing, to me anyways. Most of my books just eat with the Su-27 and barely touch on the later versions. Can someone please shed some light on this for me? safko
SU-27 and SU-27UB are nearly same in production. Earliest model of SU-27 had vertical stabilizer (VS) with anti-flutter booms and later were anti-flutter booms removed. In sparka to compensate for the added side area ahead of the CG the fins were lengthened by inserting 420 mm plug at the root. This increased the area of each fin by 20%. SU-27M/35 and SU-30MKK/M2 have different types of vertical stabilizers. First series of SU-30(SU-27PU) were rebuilded from 27UB for interceptor missions, that is why had same types of VS like sparka, 30K(commercial) also for other countries. Then was in production modernized multirole fighter 30MK, 30MKI(MK1) also for India. For China, which needs more capable fighter were made 30MKK/M2(russian version VVS) which have biggers VS with squared-off tips. Of course, it is hard to find the same sizes aircrafts in Ruassian VVS/PVO :D/>/> Edited February 7, 2016 by safko
Flankerman
I knocked up this small guide to Flanker fins some time ago. Ken

otis252
Interesting thread. Now how does the SU-35 differ from the SU-27? Chuck
beingthehero
Depends on the Su-35. There's two kinds. You have the demo one from the 90s, the Su-27M: http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/middle/6/2/3/1722326.jpg And you have the one used by the Russian air force, the Su-35S: http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/2/4/4/2268442.jpg Each have their own differences between themselves and with the basic Su-27. Flankerman definitely could tell you more than me. :S
Flankerman
If you just want visual differences, then.... Original Su-35 (T10M) - canards, slightly bigger forward fuselage and radome (without pitot), square-tipped, taller fins, twin nosewheels, brake parachute moved from tailcone to make way for rear-facing radar, one machine Bort 711) converted into Su-37 with Thrust-Vector (TVC) nozzles. My old scratch-build is on Linden Hill's website here - scroll down to find it. Latest Su-35S (T10BM) is a VERY different machine - radome without pitot, no canards, no dorsal airbrake, re-contoured tailcone without chaff/flare boxes but with brake parachute, extended-chord rudders, twin nosewheels, TVC nozzles. My scratch of this is here. Ken Edited February 8, 2016 by Flankerman
