20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Nautilus

Recommended Posts

I quick question for all you sub builders out there. Which is the best Nautilus kit out there? I was looking into the "Total Immersion" 1/72 scale Nautilus or the "Nautilus Drydocks" 1/69 scale Nautilus? Any input would be good to know which one to buy.

Thanks

I assume you are you talking about the Disney version. I'd love to have one of those myself. I got some good shots of it on display at at Disney World.

My 18 inch model from Drydocks arrived this week. It came well packed, which was good because there was a hole in the box. Furtunately whatever made the hole ran into thick packing foam that stopped it cold. There is a lot of detail on this one and it's impressive. Mine came molded in black with some white metal and clear parts. So far there had been very little flash and I found a couple places where you will have to file away some excess material, like where the rudder and propeller guard fit.

Well just as a small update guys. I did decide to go with the Nautilus Drydocks kit. The kit is beautifully cast and is huge. I have been trying different painting techniques on the kit to get the desired weathered affect. I will post a few in progress photos so you guys can tell me what you think.

I built the 1/150th , 16 inch kit. The rivet detail is complicated and there were a couple defects on the hull panels, but I just added a bit more rust at those points. The hardest part was the little clear discs around the observation bubbles and the top lights. The frame on the bubble has to be cut carefully. It's fragile and easy to cut too short.

If you have the two disc version of the movie, you should watch the extra features about what they went through to get that movie finished. They had trouble on location, had to build a sound stage with a pool, and eventually had to divert funds from building Disneyland and then go out and ask for more money. Eventually they spent more money than it took to make "Gone With the Wind"

In one scene they actually built the sub's tail onto a real sub, had the main actors, not stunt doubles, on the tail and dove the sub with them still holding on. That's insane and taking a big risk.
