CD48078 - AF-2 Guardian

Recommended Posts

I am throwing in a South Weymouth option just for your Collect-Aire kit.

Holy smokes! You serious? I do appreciate it.

This is the only depiction I've ever come across of one from there, looks like they made the "SO." as "SD." ...

I will have this sheet completed; and sent to the printer by the end of this week.

I could use some help with tracking down a BuNo/serial combination for a VS-37 AF-2S. The VS-37 had arguably the coolest looking AF-2 markings, and any AF-2 decal sheet would be incomplete without them. I included markings for an AF-2W of the unit on the sheet, but I was not able to find a BuNo for an AF-2S. I exhausted all of the obvious sources: Flickr and Google do not have anything, the Ginter book did not help. I went through the USS Princeton 1955 cruise book with the hope of finding a partial shot with a visible serial number. No luck there either.

Can anyone help identify a serial number/BuNo combination for a VS-37 AF-2S? (the photo below shows an AF-2W of the unit) I think the Collect-Aire resin kit had markings for one. There might be a photo or an accident record somewhere, or someone might have access to the National Archives (they don't have anything relevant online).

Hi,Possible to included VS-31 Topcats ... Same squadron which used Tracker and Viking :woot.gif:/>/> Tail code "SP"CheersSPang

+1, It would be great to do the aircraft VS-31 flew out of NAS Quonset Point. BTW, can not wait to get a sheet or two no matter what squadrons you choose.

So any chance of issuing Hunter/Killer pairs in the decals, or will they all be single stand alone subjects like the kits? I would have thought SH would have matched at least one pair between the boxes, but no. A marketing opportunity missed perhaps?

I will try to include at least two hunter/killer pairs on the sheet (hence my effort to find serials for a VS-37 AF-2S). The sheet will have only one set of national insignia (the national insignia on the kit decal sheet are inaccurate in shape and dimensions) though, so a hunter/killer pair will require two sheets.

All I can find from my collection is a -2S from Akron Naval Reserve with the last three digits of 233 (probably 129233 now on display at Pima as Tanker 21).

The Ginter book shows a -2W 130345 from VS-37.

Grumman AF-2W, 124829, VS-37

Found this at the San Diego Air and Space Museum Flickr page...you can just almost make out the BuAer number on the -2S...they have a list of photos of guardians held at the museum...maybe they could hook you up with some numbers

Thanks, Corey - this photo was my best lead; so I had already purchased a high-resolution version of it from another source a few days ago. Unfortunately the resolution was not high enough to let me read the BuNo of 14/SW (the AF-2S in the background). I am 60% certain that it is 124784 (which really was an AF-2S); but the only way to be sure is to get a higher-resolution scan from the original in the museum. I had contacted them a couple of days ago and have not heard back yet.

I should have known you were well ahead of me! =) sorry for spamming the thread! =)

Corey

I bet you also saw that really low res picture of the -2S on launch in the Princeton cruise book with the BuAer number just out of readability!

Looks like we posted at the same time - interesting that we both read it as 124784. Unless I hear back from the museum in a couple of days and get a chance to see a higher-resolution copy; I am leaning towards using this BuNo.

Just received an e-mail : the museum archivists who looked at the photo also believe the number ends with -784, so 124784 it is. Both of the aircraft in the photo will be on the decal sheet.

This is the final draft of the first sheet of this set. There will be an all-white second page with most of the serial numbers and other white markings, and I will post it after finishing it in a day or so.

The options on the sheet will be:

-AF-2/AF-2W hunter/killer pair from VS-37 (SU tail code)

-AF-2/AF-2W hunter/killer pair from VS-931 (SV tail code)

-Reserve AF-2W, NAS New York

-Reserve AF-2S, NAS South Weymouth

-Reserve AF-2S, NAS Jacksonville

-Aero Union fire tanker N3144G

My dad was stationed at So. Weymouth when I was a kid. Went to the base many times. The blimp hangar was huge.
