Sebastijan
Ok, everyone's got theri parking why not Sukhoi and MiG? But since Su and MiG designs are all great, I recommend we stick to OKB instead of a specific plane... Here's some pics from MAKS that I already posted but just for starters of this thread! ChernayaAkula
The only Flankers I ever saw "in the flesh" at the ILA 1994 in Berlin. Pics were taken with a small camera and the prints suffered a good deal over the years. Pics were scanned. Su-30MK Flanker prototype, visible to the right is the Su-35 Super Flanker demonstrator. trut
Su-30MKM comrade sebastijan, any chance of a hi-res version of that pic? I'm trying to get a good above view of that beautiful plane. and just a quick question. I've seen that blue 04 has some kind of a bump on its back, just after the airbrake. anyone has an idea what is it?
Flankerman
comrade sebastijan, any chance of a hi-res version of that pic? I'm trying to get a good above view of that beautiful plane.and just a quick question. I've seen that blue 04 has some kind of a bump on its back, just after the airbrake. anyone has an idea what is it? Trut, Bort 04 was a Su-30MKI, it has now been 'converted' into a development aircraft for the Malaysian Su-30MKM. The bump on the spine (there is another one on the lower front fuselage) is the multi-facetted antenna for the SAAB/Avitronic Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS). The Malaysians have specified that they don't want any Israeli kit on their aircraft, so the Israeli parts on the Su-30MKI are being replaced by Swedish & South African systems. I am (slowly) making a model of the Su-30MKM - here are the differences:- Topside.. Underside.... There are some good pics of the 'production' Su-30MKM rollout at:- http://pilot.strizhi.info/2007/05/26/3705 Even better - saves you having to search the site :- http://pilot.strizhi.info/2007/05/27/3796#more-3796 HTH Ken Edited October 9, 2007 by Flankerman
trut
thanx. a quick answer from a living flanker encyclopedia :) these mkms are mean looking machines. I'm not too wild about the all-gray-look, but every new variant of the flanker looks even more sexy than the last one. but bort 04 is still the most beautiful machine there is. "civilnaya machina" :) politics aside, I would definitely want all the israeli thingies on my flanker. heck, they even managed to convert an f-16 into something worth looking at. ;) and they should know a thing or two about avionics Edited October 10, 2007 by trut

Colin W
I reckon if I was buying a fleet of fighters I'd go Su30 MK with Rolls Royce engines and Israeli Avionics The fact they don't want anything Israeli says a lot. Colin W
thetoe17
The fact they don't want anything Israeli says a lot. Well, its a political/religious issue. Malaysia is 60% Muslim (according to the CIA World Fact Book), so you can see how they might not want Israel to profit from their purchase.

Colin W Why Rolls Royce engines ??? The Lyulka AL-31 has proved to be an excellent engine in the Su-27 How many engines could tolerate a tailslide - with all the reverse/disturbed airflow that it entails - and still keep going???? The AL-31 is a superb engine Ken

janman
How many engines could tolerate a tailslide - with all the reverse/disturbed airflow that it entails - and still keep going???? Yes, not many. It's widely acknowledged as an excellent and very tolerant engine and definetely one of the last things to be changed if you wanted to order Flankers. Better start with some of the avionics.
