Hi everyone! One aftermarket decal manufacturer suggested gray for the nose gear bay and steel for the main gear bays; is that correct? If so what FS would be most appropriate for the gray? Another question would be is the inside surface of the airbrake and its bay in bare metal color? Thanks in advance!

I've never heard of the F-5E having a gray nose gear well. I've built a few AFV F-5E's and during my research I've noted the following for USAF aggressor F-5E's.

Early (before 1982-85 or so)

Aluminum painted wheel wells and gear. Speedbrakes and well also aluminum paint.

Late (After 1982-85)

Wheel wells and speedbrakes/wells painted aluminum. Landing gear painted white.

During this transition from aluminum to white you can find aircraft with mix and match white/aluminum gear legs and wheels. One just needs to do a bit of photo research on the subject aircraft their modeling.

For the USN/Marine aggressor F-5's I can only tell you to look at photo ref's. The first one you list looks like F-5N 761548. Here is a google image search link to help you out. Google search for F-5N 761548

Looks like 548 has white main gear legs and the nose gear is painted silver. The main wheels look to be white but there are pics of the nose wheel in silver or white. It would be a safe bet to paint the wheel wells, gear doors and speedbrakes silver.

Your second F-5E looks like it's from VFC-13. I can's find much info on that particular scheme with a quick search but here is a link to a walk around of a VFC-13 F-5E. VFC-13 F-5E walk around

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

John

Hi,

For these tigers, the gear wells, speed brake wells, and inside of the gear/brake doors would be aluminum . The landing gear legs and wheel hubs would be white. HTH, Fred K.
