Forced Perspective Dogfight Diorama?

Recommended Posts

I've been tossing around the idea of doing a forced perspective display of a dogfight at the merge with vertical separation. I have 1/144, 1/72 and 1/48 potential subjects and I'm thinking along the lines of the larger scale jet (F-18 or F-16) displayed nose high just at the moment that it jettisons its gas bags and the smaller scale 1/144 (maybe even 1/350) model displayed nearer the base (lower altitude), maybe in a banking turn.

Spent the day at work trying to find similar displays on the Internet and couldn't really find anything. Anyone have any links to something similar that would be helpful in getting an idea of what is possible with an open (I'm really not wanting to build an enclosure fort it) forced perspective?

Edit, This is kinda what I'm hoping to do:

So would that be a wall-mounted diorama?

Because that would be absolutely awesome!

Main subject would be 1/48th scale while supporting/secondary subjects being 1/144th scale, maybe?

The reason why I ask regarding a wall-mount is because I have plans for building a similar diorama that will be wall-mounted.

It will involve an F-4J (Showtime 100) in a vertical rolling scissors with a MiG-17 canopy to canopy. The F-4J being 1/48th scale while the MiG-17 being 1/144th scale.

Since artwork is meant to be viewed from 1m to 2m+ away from the subject piece, forced perspective works perfectly.

True, one would want to get up real close to look at the minute details of the build, but to look at the artwork/diorama as a whole, one should be at least 1m from the subject.

Very interesting idea. I can see that would be challenging with it not being in a box. The thing about forced perspective usually is that they are are also forced angle as to where the viewer can see the subjects from. I know you said you don't want to build a box, but perhaps you could build it in a "valley" type set up so it can't really be viewed from many places other than up high. That will help keep the perspective where you want it. Kind of like a skaters half pipe so the mountain comes up around the smaller aircraft and the larger scale ones are up above that. Just a thought. I can't wait to see this one develop though.

There was a modeler here in OKC about 30 years ago who did a forced perspective of a Val at Pearl Harbor over one of the battle ship row ships. he solved the angle issue by having, in essence a single eye hole to peep through. Same then could be done with your birds
