twhite80
Here is my next project. I am doing two Hasegawa F-16s. I know that the Tamiya kit is the standard but I had these two in my stash from the days before the Tamiya kit and I had lots of goodies for them so I thought what the heck. Why I am building two is beyond me other than I just finished a pair of Mudhens and two at a time is kind of fun. So here goes.
galileo1
Looking forward to this one. I have a Hasegawa F-16B I'll be turning into a NSAWC jet so I'd love to see what you do with these. Rob
ThePhantomTwo
Let me know if you need any help with the particulars of 85-1495,got plenty of walkarounds and crewed it more than a couple dozen times when we had it on the flightline
twhite80
Big thanks Phantom. I might need some walk around photos. I am excited to build this jet. I am a huge Peyton Manning fan and even though I have been a Broncos fan my whole life I figured that it would be okay to build a Colts jet. Here is my progress so far. The Aires wheel bays are a significant upgrade and I say almost a necessity when you see how sparse the Hasegawa wheel bays actually are. But they are far from a perfect fit. I had to use a lot of filler and do some sanding to make the panel in between the rear wheel bays sit level and flush. Patience pays off here.

jminer
T, Looking forward to seeing how these two progress! J
twhite80
The Aires cockpits are a definite upgrade but I wish that they were a little easier to install. You must cut a lot and test fit and fill. It is by no means a drop in replacement. So its kind of the same story here as it was with the wheel wells. If I clean it up and get those seams eliminated or at least minimized all will be good.
twhite80
I have been lazy in posting but I have been chugging along on these Vipers. First I got them all primed Then I painted the traditional 2 color Viper Now its a matter of masking and painting the NSAWC viper. The snag that I hit was the realization that the Steel Beach masks I bought were for a different jet than the one I was modeling. The schemes are incredibly similar but not the same. So I have had to un mask, paint, and re-mask in places. This is my fault. I do want to plug the Steel Beach masks. The vinyl sheet that Darren uses is outstanding and they DO NOT BLEED! I have discovered just how good they are when I have had to peel them back to get the correct scheme.
twhite80
Getting a little closer. I tried to make my camouflage closer to the scheme used on the real NSAWC jet. I will be using the 'Holy S#!t! Its a Vipers Sheet' from Fightertown.
taggor
Coming along really nice. I have and early block "A" model in the stash. Your build advise is really helpful with the use of the Aires wheel bays and cockpit and I plan on using the same. The "Adversary" camo came out great! Actually....... both paint jobs look great! Joel_W
Don't know how I missed the start of another of your twin builds. I was with you right from the start of your Mudhens. Just a greats build that really helped me over a few rough spots on my F-15C build. So I'll be here right to completion. Both F-16s really look quite nice in their respective camo paint schemes. and both Pits, and all those Aires wheel wells came out fantastic. Looking forward to your next update. twhite80
Thanks for the comments all. I found another Hasegawa F-16A on eBay for $5, so I will be adding a third into the build soon. I have already installed the aires wheel wells (I have now depleted the stash) and I need to pick up one more resin pit, which I still think is a huge improvement over the kit. Maybe you can see the Diana anniversary tail decals from Daco under my two vipers. She will be next! Hope to have more pics soon. Cheers y'all!
BJ Blazkowicz
Triple build? Now that's what I call multitasking! Awesome job. I wish I had your pace. I'll be following this!
Joel_W
Not really a triple in the strict sense of the term. More like a 2 plus 1. Still takes a lot of dedication and determination to build 3 of the basically same aircraft. Joel
twhite80
The size makes building 3 easier and there is a lot of repetition too so that actually helps. Most of my build time happens after I put the 2 year old to sleep so it comes in chunks but it is definitely something I look forward to! More pics to come soon! Joel_W
My "little one" is almost 28. So his bedtime is actually after mine. Times sure do change. Joel
twhite80
Okay, so here is an update and a plea for help! My Viper nest has gotten out of hand to be sure so I decided to finish one and make sure that I apply the lessons learned to the rest. You can see what I have on my plate here. I am going to skip the Two seater and just do a single seater F-16 for the brown camo and save the 2 seater for later. I used the MiG wash to try to bring out the good detail in the Aires wells. I used an oil wash over acrylic before but a long time ago. I was doing an Abrams tank and it was awesome! But this time I laid it down and used just regular thinner to try to clean it up and it pulled the paint off the wheel well. What did I do wrong and how do I do this correctly? I applied a tamiya primer then Vallejo white. Then I hit it with a coat of future and let it dry over night. Then I did the wash and let it dry. Then I used just regular testers thinner (not the MiG thinner) and it ate away at my paint. So I am a little bummed because I know a wash can really set off those Aires wheel wells. Any ideas? polar bear
I always spray gross clear coat before wash. It protects base color, makes enamel/oil flow and remove easier.
Joel_W
Seems rather strange that a enamel oil wash and thinners would eat right through Future which is a really tough acrylic clear coat. Joel Edited May 9, 2015 by Joel_W

polar bear
Ahh, I forget to tell I use lacquer clear. Regards
twhite80
I ordered some MiG thinner. I will respray the wheel well and try again with that. I was puzzled too that it ate through the future. I could try the clear lacquer but wouldn't that dissolve with the thinner? Or is that part of the process?
Joel_W
Twhite80, I've been using Testors Dullcoat and Glosscoat which are true lacquers since the 70's and have never had any issues with either one. Needless to say, I still use them even though I have a half dozen different acrylic clear coats. Joel
SERNAK
Any progress???
twhite80
Here is where I ended up on the wheel bays. The MiG wash is much better with the MiG thinner. I think I botched the NSAWC wheel wells by not coating them with suture before applying the wash. The MiG wash is good but acts like a stain if the surface isn't glossy. I am working on fixing it. More pics when that issue is resolved.
