Ford GPW - Trial fit of the body

Recommended Posts

Quite a big kit that has needed stripping, repairing, scratch building and rebuilding

14 months into the project, today saw the first trial fit of the tub onto the chassis. This is the only building I'm getting done at present, and it is substantially more messy than working in plastic!

It takes quite a bit more space than even 1/35 scale armour!

Looks great. NIce job on the chassis and engine. I'm not sure that primer color is correct for a WWII GPW though. That shade may have been a later model. Also, it looks like you missed a spot on the left side. :thumbsup:/>

Seriously, great job on it. I would love to have the time to rebuild an old jeep. I like the others you have there as well.

Here is my latest build.

We have had it for a few months now. It is my daughter's. My brother, my daughter and I did all the bodywork and repainted it in a 7-day marathon when we both had a week off work. The interior is taking a bit longer as I get time over a few days off here and there.

Markings mostly done, glass in, and new battery on trickle top up charge prior to a starting attempt. I tried once before, but a fuel pump without a primer made it virtually impossible to get fuel along 10 feet of empty lines. A new pump was fitted with a priming lever.

Seat cushions fitted today.

Here's the Jeep as I first got it.

The whole thing was pulled to bits. There weren't any "Instructions" with this kit, so I did a lot of photographing of parts as it came apart.

The engine, transmission and transfer case were all pulled to bits and rebuilt.

The tub took quite a bit of space in the workshop, and it took just over a year to get to the rolling chassis stage seen in earlier posts.

The insurance started today. So after a fluid level check all round, and the back end up on ramps with the wheels hanging free so I could run the wheels and bed in the handbrake a bit ( contracting band type ), I gingerly ran the GPW up and down the street a couple of times. A few more checks and tweaks and back out around the housing estate and once more late in the afternoon. There's now 3 miles on the clock!

Happy and very relieved. This is the first drive in who knows how many years, since the Jeep died on a Texas farm and lay there hoping for rescue.

So the GPW now has a name; 'Hope'.

She looks great! Hoping mine comes out as nice. I'm still dealing with frame issues right now, but once that's done, she should start to fall together fairly quickly. What's your Date of Delivery? Mine's 16 September 42 and she's not a script jeep. My buddy's was delivered two weeks earlier and it is, go figure.
