Akan Paints

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be building the Hobby Boss 1/32 Il-2 (the early single-seater) and I'm looking to get some Akan Paints, as they are apparently the most accurate paints for Russian/Soviet aircraft. I'm wondering which would be the correct set to buy - Set 47317 is listed as being specifically for the Il-2, but there's some indication that the colours are for the later aircraft and Set 47305 (Yak-3: USSR Airforce WWII 1943-45) would be a better choice. Any opinions?

I think set 46305 (acrylic lacquers) or 47305 (aqueous acrylics) is indeed what you want. I'm pretty sure the camouflage scheme for the early single-seaters was generally AMT-4 (Green) and AMT-6 (Black) over AMT-7 (Light Blue). Incidentally, looking at the Linden Hill listings, AKAN has apparently (and properly) renamed sets 46305 and 47305 as WWII ... 1941-43.

Also, FWIW, I personally like the acrylic lacquers much better than the aqueous acrylics -- they're not as dark, and they cover better. Of course, you may not wish to deal with solvent-based paints.

for the single-seat Il-2 you'd be better off with 47305/46305. Set 317 includes the Il-2m3-specific AMT-1 Brown and AMT-12 Dark Gray, which would be of little use to you on this project. Set 305 also includes MK-7 White distemper for winter schemes.

The only relevant color you'd be missing with set 305 is 6/73041 A II Kr Red, which is handy for VVS markings (red stars, bort numbers, etc.)
