I saw this 21st Century Toys F-104C/G in a Wal-mart in the States last month and at 40.00 it was too good to resist. I forgot to take a photo before I took it apart, but there is a similar F-104 by Tony Landis.

Tony Landis 21st Century Toys F-104

Here's what mine looks like right now (Some of the photos aren't so great):

IPB Image

The part breakdown is VERY similar to the Has. F-104G (Maybe they have a modeler working for them). I'll have to scratch build a long chord tail for it, but most of the panel lines and rivtets are in the right spot.

So far, I've re-painted the cockpit and dry brushed. I prefer to dry brush before I paint the buttons. The cockput even came with instrument dials.

IPB Image

This sucker is BIG. Each wingtip tank is a foot long!

IPB Image

Some rivet detail is missing so I'm adding it using the Has kit as a guide. I'm also re-scribing the panel lines since the paint they used filled them in a bit. This photo isn't so great, I'll re-post this one once I prime these parts.

These kits ... umm display models ... umm toys are AWESOME!! I have the 1:18 F-16C, F/A-18C, and SEA F-104C in my stash. I'm seriously thinking about doing some major work on the F-16 (weapons, pods, and markings) and the F/A-18C (weapons only). I'll wait until I have display room before I tear into it like you are doing.

I'm taking notes! Keep posting the progress!

They came out with the F-16C a few years ago ... Wolf Pack, Hill AFB, several ANG units, and a generic no tail markings so that you can do them yourself. The one that they are coming out with soon is actually a re-release of the Wolf Pack edition.

Did a simple respray on their F/A-18 once, and man, these things are HUGE!

So, what markings have you got planned for this one?

UPDATE NOV. 2 Wheel well and Rear Stabilizer

I was going to leave the wheel well alone, but decides that I might as well replace the molded hydraulic lines with some fine solder. All I need to add to it when the paint dries is a wash.

IPB Image

Now the rear stab. I marked off a grid and drilled the rivets using a #74 drill bit.

IPB Image

4 hours and seven hand cramps later, here's what I had:

IPB Image

Doesn't look too bad with a primer coat.

IPB Image

Now onto the wings.......

OMG, I didn't realize you did the rivets yourself... I now agree with Wayne. Still totally fascinated with your work though... Cannot wait to see this done.

UPDATE Jan 9, 2007

OK, all that Holiday stuff is out of the way and I'm, back at it again. This time I added the rivet detail to the wings (Yes, all of them).

I also have a new digi cam to play with which is a big improvement over my 5 year old Kodak.

Here are the wings with their first primaer coat. As usual, a few little imperfections have shown up, like the ejector pin marks on the wing bottoms, so once the primer has cured for a couple of days, I'll break out the putty and sandpaper.

Top of Wings:

IPB Image

Bottom of Wings:

Next I have to scratchbuild the long chord tail.

One quik Q. What are you doing for markings? Self made, or are there any available?

I saw the Mig 15 at Wal Mart the other day. Now that could be fun!!!!

Not sure yet, I've scaled up some existing decals and they are big enough to make a template and paint on. Canmilair decals can make a custom set for a fee, but 1/18 may be too big. Some I will have to print myself. I've downloaded the font that the RCAF used and can make these myself.

MaxHeadroom,

Printing any of my CF-104 sets in 1:18 scale would not be a problem and with any serial number you may want. I've sold several sets in this scale lately and due to their popularity, I have made 1:18 an option of its own in my price drop-down.
Three finished 1:18 scale models are now presented on my Customers Gallery page. Shown are a RCAF P-51, Hammy Gray's Corsair IV and the latest is a beautiful Canadair F-86 Sabre Mk 6 in the 1963 Golden Hawks scheme. These are truly awesome in this scale, and I really like the pilots!!
I've been seriously thinking about getting one of these Starfighters myself, as I have seen it at my local WalMart. It would look kinda kool sitting next to my 1:144 example, eh!!

Cool, I will be in touch. If you do buy one, try to get the German one, and not the silver or SEA camo one as they have the wrong tail for the CF-104, as I found out and will soon be scratchbuilding.

Update 2007-01-21.

Well, I have the tail done. I had to scratchbuild the proper long chord tail, which went better than I thought. Next up is the wing tanks.

I've put a ruler in the pictures so you get an idea of how big this thing is!
