USMC Super Harriers

Recommended Posts

Going to start this one off, because I've recently been seeing lots more interesting things happening with the Harriers in the Marines' service. Colour is appearing on a lot of tails, and for the first time in a while there has been clearance for a new weapon (the GBU-38 JDAM).

COLOUR BIRDS

Most of the colour birds are on Airliners.net and here are the links:

Anyway, to kick things off, here is a link to the VMA-542 CO jet with some pretty cool artwork on the tail I haven't seen before

VMA-513 CO with the blue tail (available in 1/48 from TwoBobs and Superscale)

VMA-231 CO with cool flames on the drop tanks (different tail markings than the Hasegawa 1/48 kit provides)

VMA-311 CO with the black tail (available in 1/48 from TwoBobs and Superscale)

VMA-211 CO with full colour "stars n bars" (available in 1/48 from Superscale)

Variation on the VMA-211 jet with reversed rudder colours and different unit badge on nose

I'm trying to get up with someone from VMAT-203 to get some photos. We just painted the tail of their 02 bird gloss black with the red hawk's head and fancy red with yellow shadowed buno and "Marines" also on the tail. If cameras were allowed at work, I could have got some really good in process photos of it.

It's a single, but they have both in their squadron. So far, I've had no luck, but I will try again when I go to work tomorrow. It's a shame it's so difficult and they are so close to my building, only a couple of buildings down from mine. The hawk's head is the same as in your avatar without the circle and squadron number on it.

FASM = Forward Air Support Munition?

Nice pics

FASM = F**king A Single Mom.

Buddy of mine is Dale Snodgrass's nephew and was givin FASM for a short time under the pretense of "Future Aviator Star of the Millenium." Needless to say he eventually figured out what Snort really meant by FASM and wisely chose NOT to tell his girl. ;)

Don't see the two seat one every day. Very neat. I wonder if they're still around in any significant numbers?

Not many out there. Only around 12 total, all with VMAT-203 at Cherry Point, NC. Brits have a few as well, not sure but I don't think the Spanish or Italians have any as thier pilots are trained at VMAT-203.

Been keeping an eye out since you mentioned it and guess what. Here it is. Quite like this scheme AND it's an NA bird too, which you don't see wearing colours often. Note that it's 20 too, not 02.
