Tomcat Tweeker
Hi All! Can I play! I'll be using the A-4E "USS Midway" Boxing to do an F and using an Eduard PE Set and AM Decals.. Not sure what bird I'll be doing.... As of now it's down to 2.... "Lady Jessie" and VA-22 Redcocks bird. Both on their "69-70" Vietnam Cruise. Both are pretty cool! May come down to a coin toss or I'll have my Wife and Daughter pic! LOL On to the start up Pic's Thanks for looking! Dave LOL Found this sprue in the box when I brought it home from the LHS. Looks like the "Toilet Bomb" from Hasagawa's OLD Monogram boxing of the Skyraider! Look at the Vintage Logo molded in the sprue! Super cool!!! Joel_W
Dave, I'll be following your build as I will be building the same Hasegawa kit, but with the AM parts and decals that come with the Eduard Limited edition offering. I'm still a week or so away from starting, as I want to finish up my present F2A-3 build 1st. Joel
Tomcat Tweeker
Thanks Joel! Looking forward to seeing ur build! Just a small update... Working the pit... Now I'm gonna do something that I never do, and thats totally finish the pit 1st! Seem's that I always do just enough to get the model closed up so I can get to the paint stage... Then when I'm done, I still need to sort out the seats etc.. Not this time HAHAHA Still have more work to do, But I'm on a roll! Well for me anyway! Thanks for looking! kurnass77
As a painter I said many times that I preferr the "classic" PE to add fun to my build painting it,but I admitt that the prepainted one are impressive! Great start mate! Gianni
pollie
That IP looks really good!
Tomcat Tweeker
One last update for the weekend.... Think I have the pit done... Not super, but great for me! Thanks for looking! Dave
falcon20driver
Looking great. Love the toilet bomb!
Joel_W
Dave, The pit really looks quite good. And your IP is very well done. Just don't forget to add enough weight in the nose to keep it on it's legs before you close up the fuselage halves. Joel Edited July 19, 2015 by Joel_W
Tomcat Tweeker
Small update today folks. Got the fuselage all buttoned up (Thanks Joel for the weight reminder! I almost forgot! LOL). Shot the seams with black and seam touch up begins with an application of Mr Surfacer 1200. Will let it go off tonight and hit it back up after work tomorrow. Also put together the Avi Hump and checked it's fit... Not great. The hump was pretty narrow where it fit into the aft fuselage so I had to trough out the aft bulkhead of the hump and insert a sprue spacer.... Sorted that issue out, but will have some work to do once it is installed. Thanks for looking! Dave
pollie
Good progress! If it makes you feel any better: the fit of the humps of my 1/72 Fujimi Skyhawks is equally horrible :D
falcon20driver
Looking great. I too am lamenting my electronics hump.
Tomcat Tweeker
Thanks Guys! Well progress continues! Got the hump on and applied Mr Surfacer 500 to the offending gaps.... Gonna let it dry for a couple days so it shrinks as much as possible... Worked the intakes as well. Mr Surfacer was put to work again.... Will give them a few days to go off as well Decided to take care of the inherent step on the leading edge that isn't supposed to be there. they were cut off the upper wing halves 1st by scribing and then cut with a razor saw. Then added a .010 strip of styrene to the aft edge. Glued the upper and lower halves of the wings before re attaching the leading edges flush with the upper wing skin. I let the upper glue joint to go off a while before gluing the leading edge down just to ensure that the upper joint was solid. Sanded the joint without trashing the detail too much, but after a black primer check... It needs some work. Have a couple coats of styrene filler on them and will sand them down after good and dry. More later! Thanks for looking! Dave Edited July 26, 2015 by Tomcat Tweeker
falcon20driver
That's a brave thing to do, I'd be terrified to try that. You did a great job on it though and I'm sure it'll be one of those little details that really sets your build appart from others.
Joel_W
going to be following your led on the Avionics pack on the back on my build. I'm in total agreement with Falcon20driver about your removing that step. It looks great, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to live with it on my build. I'm jus not to sure how the fix will look after I attempt it. Joel Edited July 26, 2015 by Joel_W
spejic
I like your fix for the wings. It's something that isn't as difficult as it seems, but it makes a big difference in the look of the model. There's a lot of great information here, and I'll remember this thread for my own 1/48 Hasegawa kits.
spejic
And when I was doing the slat fix for my 1/48 kit, I put tape on either side of the seam line so even after lots of filling and sanding I lost very little detail (which is easy to do in this location). Tomcat Tweeker
Thanks all! Appreciate the kind words..... Joel, I address the wing mod below LOL Update time! Still working the Wing Mod.... Not sure if its worth the effort, but at least I can say I did it once... Think I have the filling sussed out.... Now ready for re-scribing. After wiping back the primer w/ acrylic thinner.... The panel lines and rivet detail remained highlighted to aid in this task. We'll see how it goes I then worked the Intakes. The Mr Surfacer was wiped back with a cotton swab soaked in Leveling thinner.... Then they were painted with Tamiya Gloss white. Then I masked them prior to installing the Intake lips then stuffed some foam inside to completely seal the intakes off.
Tomcat Tweeker
Then sorted out the steps between the lips and the trunks, Re scribed and primed Mounted the Intakes to the Fuselage.... Fit was perfect! No filler required and retained the natural panel line! Primed the Fuselage. She looks pretty good! And started the Drop Tanks! That's it for now! Thanks for looking! Joel_W
Dave, You're making excellent progress. I really like your method of masking the intakes before gluing them to the fuselage. I think I'll be going that route as well. There was a thread a few days about this, and there was one suggestion from a guy that has already built 6 Scooters. His method is to leave off the lip till after all the painting is done. I was going to go that route, but I really like your method better. His way, there could still be alignment issues after painting. Joel
RKic
great work on getting fit so nice and tight. She looks near and trim with the primer coat.
Tomcat Tweeker
Thanks heaps Joel! I hope the intakes turn out as well as I hope.... If they do, I suggest, if u haven't bought some already, get some Mr. Cement S. It's just like Tamiya extra thin. But it isn't as aggressive in the fact that it evaporates quicker. I was worried that extra thin would soak thru the joint and creep under the tape. I don't think it did, But only time will tell for sure. Anyway... After the Mr Cement set for a bit, I did go back over the seam with extra thin to ensure a good external bond on the seam line. Being new to the Mr Cement, I didnt wanna chance a weak joint. But initial observations are that the stuff seems to bond really well! Dave
Tomcat Tweeker
Update Time! Worked the wings a bit more Installed some photo etch and built the PE Speed Brakes. Installed the Canopy/Windscreen (windscreen glued in with Mr Cement S) and Horizontal Stabs then primed with Stynylrez! Beautiful stuff that is! I'm not a fan of the Grey version... Too dark, But I did get the 3 pack w black and white as well, so I mixed 75% white to 25% grey and came up with a shade I liked... The slat work is done. Doesn't look too bad, Far from perfect, but close enough for me. Think she's ready for Primary painting! Thanks for looking! Joel_W
Dave, Nice update. I worked on the avionics humps and the fit is pretty good. Just a little primer filler by the cockpit, but the joint by the tail will need work. Your slat fix really came out perfectly, but I think I'm going to go with the it as it comes out of the box, as I'm quite confident I'd screw it up.I'm working on both intakes this morning, and I'm following your procedure as it looks like the best possible way to handle that tricky Red/White demarcation line. All that extra PE really does add quite a bit of realism to your build. Joel
