F-8E Crusader, Fighting Shamrocks, 1/72 Academy kit

Recommended Posts

My first entry will be a pretty simple and OOB kit: The excellent F-8E of Academy in 1/72.

I´m planning to do this as a "mud mover", armed with 8 MK-82s and 8 Zuni's.

Already started painting the first parts:

Lots of subassembled parts have to be placed in the fuselage before closing them:

But thanks to the excellent engineering of the kit first dry-fits went good.

Here is the cockpit with the pilot, I used one from the Revell-set. Looks like I have to buy my fifth set soon... the first four ones are already depleted!

I like jets: As soon as you have closed the fuselage the build is nearly completed... ;)

For those that may do this bird as well: The belly-section around the gear and the air-break is tricky, I have to admit that I didn´t paid too much attention to this, therefor it looks a bit "dirty".

Tomorrow evening I will start painting the white underside. Not my favorite part of this build, I just don´t like brush-painting white colour.

Looks nice. You are right it is a lot more detailed than the old Hasegawa 1/72

Crusader. I stopped brush painting long ago, I still don't have an airbrush set

up so I mask with Tamiya tape and use spray cans. Most of the time it is Testors

Model Master paint. The only problem with spray cans is you can get a heavy

demarcation line when you pull the tape off.Heavier spray than an airbrush.

It shows here in this picture. HTH---John

Well, the white underside isn´t perfect, but I´m thinking about adding some weathering and washing in the end of the build. Any ideas or hints for doing so?

The grey looks much better:

Now it´s the details I will work out.

The following two pics show the model with decals attached:

Application was straight forward, I´ve left away a good portion of the smaller stencils.

And with a really fresh coat (still drying!) of matt clear applied:
