Don
Hello all! I am a little late to the party here but better late then never I suppose. My entry into this GB will be the Revell 1/32 Bf-109g6 kit (early version for this build). The standard box shot: The kit is a real beauty with exceptional detail and considered by many to be the most accurate 109g in 1/32. For between $20-$25 USD its a steal of a deal!! It will be straight OOB except for a few little scratch details like rudder peddle foot straps and this gorgeous decal sheet with 4 of the ace of aces 109g mounts...that's Erich Hartmann of course ;) (the first option is the scheme I will be doing): This is where I am currently: Main cockpit components have details added and are all painted and ready to assemble. Everything you see in the picture is straight OOB with the exception of the rudder peddle straps. There are approximately 20 separate parts in that picture. Easy assembly with no hassles. Not too shabby IMHO. Way to go Revell . Anyways, I should have more updates early next week. Cheers all! Don.
Don
Moving along...the cockpit components are all assembled, the wing spar has been attached, and the fuselage has been assembled including the multi-piece engine cowl: The kit so far falls together BUT you have to dry fit, dry fit, dry fit and use your own modelers instincts and not follow the plans to the letter. For example I installed the engine cowl sides before assembling the two fuselage halves and this made for a good fit and I could flow Tamiya extra thin in the seam from the back. I also left off the armor behind the pilots head area as this can get installed at a later stage. Another area where I threw the kits plans out the window can be seen in the photo above. My knife blade is pointing at internal braces that really serve no purpose at this stage and actually interfere with the top of the cowl. So...I cut them out. The result was quite a good fit of the upper cowl that required just a touch of putty: The cowl gun bulges have been installed. I cut off all of the locating pegs and the fit went from "meh" to pretty much bang on. The 109 experts say they are undersized and should be replaced with AM bulges. They are probably right as I am no expert BUT they look fine to me and that's all that matters. Well folks that's where I stand right now. Still a long way to go but I am REALLY enjoying this large scale Revell 109! Kudos to Revell ! Hope to have another update within a week or so. Don.
nspreitler
Looks really good, I have been building 1/48 scale for forever but some of these 1/32 kits are really tempting.
Don
Honestly these new Revell 1/32 kits go together like 1/48 kits. Nothing bulky or strange about them. The parts breakdown and assembly steps are all very familiar to 1/48 builders. At $20-$23 USD they are a real bargain IMHO. Don.
Don
Small update. Once again I deviated from the kits plans and glued the upper wing section to the spar and fuselage sides before assembling the wheel wells. Then I assembled the wheel wells and this makes it 100% easier to get all of those interior pieces all lined up (three per-wheel well, four if you count the spar): Now I can paint the wheel well interior grey/green and then continue on assembling the multi-piece wing sections. I am thinking that I will again deviate from the plans and attach the entire upper wing sections first to achieve a near perfect fit and then glue the whole one-piece lower wing section. More to follow. Don
Jim S
Nice to see the work of somebody else who has a blatant disregard for kit instructions! Lol. But seriously though it looks like a really nice kit and I am amazed the cockpit is OOB. This really is a great era for our hobby, between the kits, decals, and aftermarket options it's astonishing. Anyway, I'm no 109 expert but this will be awesome when it is all said and done. Thank you for sharing your progress. Jim S Edited April 3, 2016 by Jim S
Don
Hi Jim and thanks for the post. Yeah I have always seen the plans/instructions more like guidelines then etched in stone. I admit that my seam filling is a weak point of mine so I do everything I can to minimize having to do it. Most often then not by studying the plans before beginning the build I can spot potential trouble areas and think of ways to work around them by adjusting the building sequences. It doesn't work all the time but a majority of the time it does. Thanks again . Don.
Don
Progress! I attached all of the upper wing sections first, achieving a great fit. Revell put the different sections right along the real panel lines of the 109, which are fairly deep and defined on the real aircraft which lends itself well to the 1/32 model. Tamiya extra thin flowed in from the back of wing, a quick swipe with a sanding stick and done: Underside with wheel wells painted but still in need of a wash (I will do that in the later stages of the build): I still have a few seams to clean up on the underside as can be seen in the photograph above. In addition the canopy sill needs to have some filler sanded smooth as does a spot here and there on the tail and nose. I figure another week or so and I should be at the priming stage. Thanks for looking all! Feel free to comment. Don.
Bigasshammm
The funny thing is this is a 1/32 plane and it's not much bigger than a lot of 1/48 kits. If I was better or had a better airbrush I'd love to do one of those winter schemes. Talk about gorgeous. Keep it up.
11bee
Nice job so far! This kit is one of my favorites, looking forward to seeing how yours turns out.
