  1. The main difference is that the A-6 uses a re-designed wing to allow for a pair of MG 151/20 cannons in the outer bays, unlike the earlier wing which could only house the Mg FF cannon in the outboard bays. The rest of the guns were not changed.

Check here for more details: http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2004/11/stuff_eng_fw190_01.htm

As for the kit, make sure you use the lower wing with the flat hatches under the outer wing cannon and open ejection ports in the hatches. Otherwise follow the instructions for an A-5. If using the decals for Walter Nowotny's aircraft, do not use any cannon in the outer bays - he had them removed to save weight and maximize performance.

ok here is the short answer for you. Can't give the long version right now, I'm at work. I'll give more details to you after I get off work at 5AM

    squadron must be currently active

    VFA-11 yes

    VF-111 no

    VFA-103 yes

    VF-84 no

    I

I do not recall this being mentioned as one of the criteria before now.

  3. Correct.

But bases on Darren Robert's build of the kit, the frames are not thick enough for a G model.

Also, you can see that I mean about the front corners of the canopy being part of the fuselage plastic.

  4. Well you need to sand flush any bumps and scoops on the nose, cowling, and upper wings. This includes the large bulges for the machine guns on the upper cowling. Hopefully, the kit provides these as separate pieces, otherwise you are in for much work to remove and fill the holes that remain.

The next major issue is the canopy. The 109F canopy has glass panels on the lower front corners and the 109G has sheet metal in those places. The kit uses the plastic molded to the fuselage in this area. See this picture for a 109F canopy:

Also you will want to represent the hatches seen in the above picture as they are not on the G model. The most important one is the large hatch below the canopy, which is for the fuel filler. There is a small, oval shaped, hatch on the upper left of the rear fuselage  that needs to be filled - as that is the fuel filler on the G models.

Not to hijack the discussion, but sometimes I think a "What-if USN" build would be fantastic. VF-101 markings on Crusaders and Hornets, VF-161 Tomcats, VA-61 Jolly Rogers Skyhawks, VF-96 Tomcats and Hornets, VF-84 F-4S lo-vis, VF-24 Super Hornets, etc. Like the VMFA-333 Tomcat I did years ago. :)

I've always thought a proper Jolly Rogers F-8 would look amazing.

Also, I have an Idea for a VF-2 Phantom.

Yeah, I'm down for a What If USN group build.

What Darren said. Also, the KA-6D kit can be built as an A-6A out of the box, the parts are all on the sprues. Instead of mounting the drogue parts (86/83), install the doppler antenna (80) to part 79 instead. Lop off the rear section of the antenna if modeling the later Intruders in the war that had the chaff/flare buckets (scribed on part 79 already). The ALQ-100 pylons are also provided on the sprues (81) depending on if the A you're interested in had them on it or not. The instrument panel in the kit is the bomber version that has the molded on details, just skip the tanker panel decals to put on it. The rest of the details depending on which configuration of A you're looking to model.

edit.... just use the A-6A kit instructions:

    http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10068961

You'll see the sprue layouts are the same as the kit you have except its missing the ordnance sprue and the tanker kit has the tanker parts included, everything else is the same.

Excellent. Thank you. I've got some MERs and Snakeyes form a couple F-8E kit's I can throw on there. Also, I think I have some Rockeye cluster bombs in a Hase weapon pack. Only thing now are the decals. Ideally, I'd like to go with VA-196.

  7. I had the pleasure of meeting Hal at a show in MA about 5 years ago. He was an absolute pleasure to talk to about modelling and anything Luftwaffe. I still remember his most emphasized bit if advice - always pick up a 109 by the nose.

    Rest In Pease, Sir.

  8. You won't be able to do a standard G-2, G-6, or G-14 with this kit. You can get reasonably close to the high altitude G-14 A/S or some late G-6 A/S, but with either you will have to shorten the tail wheel strut and add a dust boot.

It you feel like scratchbuilding the retractable tail wheel bay and doors as well as do some filling and rescribing of some hatches you can also get very close to a K-4.
