  1. Gents:

Here is the preliminary artwork on the 1/144 scale sheet. It has not been proof read so there may be mistakes.

    Mark S.

    Mark-

Any chance you have the B-52H windows as decals? The RoG kit's glass is really off to my eye.

  2. This needs a bump...

Lockheed C-130H-3 Hercules USAF AFRC 328AS "Tenete Eos In Tenebris/Mushroom Airlines," 914AW Niagara Falls IAP, NY S/N 92-3281, c/n 5331. A heavily zapped toilet. Sorry about the poor focus, but the subject matter is interesting! Taken at Thunder over Niagara 2007.

Happy Independence Day to all Americans at home and abroad, especially those in uniform! :salute:

  3. Flankerman-

I believe this was introduced to allow the LSOs to distinguish the E-2C+ from the baseline E-2C while on approach. The Plus model has more power (Allison T56-A-427 engine with approximately 5,100 horsepower) than the vanilla C with the -425 model at 4,600 shp. I imagine the extra power made for better performance in the pattern, which those on the deck would want to be aware of. Globalsecurity.org claims the plus models were introduced starting back in '88, so this would be long before the new props were introduced.

Wikipedia notes these different versions as Group 0 (the baseline version) and Group I/II (plus versions).

As always, I'll defer to someone else if they are more in the know.

Is it common to have some of the pylons removed when not needed? I don't know if I have seen this on an Apache before. I assume this deletion, along with the light warload, is in part due to hot/high conditions in the area of operation.

Another weird thing to put on a model and get people to scratch their heads. ;)

  5. Ventris-

I agree with Pete, the LGB is a GBU-16. The photos looks like the 2001 OEF deployment, correct? IIRC this was the first combat use of the Super Hornet. If you don't want Snakeyes on the VERs you can load 3x 1000 lb BLU-110 (Mk. 83 with different explosive) slicks on the opposite side of the LGB. Two would go inboard on a VER, the third single on the middle pylon. A single AIM-120 can go outboard of the LGB to help counterbalance the moment of this asymmetric load.

My apologies if these are CVERs and not VERs. I find it hard to tell the difference sometimes.

Best of luck in modeling this historic moment in Super Bug history.

  6. Nitevision92-

I built this when I was in my youth, it is the old Crown mold. It is a Pre-modified (no EVS) "Cadillac" B-52H. Weapons are the SRAMs as seen on the box top or Skybolts, which never went into service.

I have the current RoG mold in my stash now, more detail, but basic shape issues in places like the windscreen.

  7. The LAU-115A/A is of interest to me to build a Il-38 "May" interceptor from the Coral Seal 1986. There are a couple of good shots on DefenceImagery.mil of Hornets from VMFA-323 and VFA-132 intercepting Mays shadowing the group on this cruise. The Marine bird carries the 6x AIM-9 load that requires the LAU-115. Now to find all the early Sidewinder rails in my stash...

  8. Getting slightly off topic, would the GBU-15s in the Italeri boxing be OK for a USAF F-15E? Also, I didn't see the guidance pod in the Cybermodeler photos. Would I still need to scrounge that item somewhere else? I've got an OEF build I'd like to do with the GBU-15/24 loadout.

    Thx

  9. Just to clarify, the GBU-49 is not a Paveway IV, but is referred to as an 'Enhanced GBU-12' and is distinguished by a conduit running down the left side of the bomb from an umbilical connection behind the aft suspension lug to the guidance section on the nose, (which also includes the GPS antennas as shown on this photo of the PW4). So far as I know, only the UK has bought the PW4 and until and unless the US buys some it will not be given a GBU designation.

Question - why the hardback on this version? Is there some difference in mounting lugs or fin clearance for the planes that carry it?

  10. There does seem to be some debate on the colors. I know I saw photos of the Marine jets in the 3-color scheme, but I'm almost positive this was an earlier deployment (DefenseImagery.mil shows one from VMFA-323 in this scheme in 1984 with the WS tailcode, onboard Connie). My understanding is that the 3-color didn't last long. Never found out why - was it the more complex masking, or were the colors a little too light? My vote based on the few photos at DefenseImagery.mil is that all the Hornets on the Coral Sea for that cruise were in the 2 color ghost gray scheme. If there is good evidence to the contrary, I'll stand corrected.

  11. I have the RoG B-52H. I don't know if I'd call it a joke, but the window framing has some serious issues. I've been thinking of getting the Crown/Revell (USA)/Minicraft kit just to get a pattern to fix that one issue. Now that Minicraft is modernizing, maybe I'll just build that one.

  12. OK, found it on Defenseimagery.mil as A6BSTARM suggested. DN-SC-88-01689 is the right shot, there is also a cool-looking but not very useful for modelers shot at DN-SC-88-01692. A/C is from VFA-131; you may find more by looking for the other units, the ship, etc.

Best of luck to you in your build!
