  1. Hi Folks,

    This is my first post of of model.

    I have built many (not very good) models over the years but this was my first serious attempt trying a number of , for me, new techniques.

    The main ones being using an Air brush, masking, primer, panel wash, giving the aircraft a somewhat worn/dirty look, I made templates and airbrushed the "bort" numbers 223 and used Mav decals for national markings,they are very thin and worked very well. These were all "firsts" for me.

    So please don't expect a masterpiece, however any critisizms or advice are welcome.

    This is the Academy 1/48 Mig-21MF but I understand that the spine is closer to the Mig-21 Bis so that suits me fine to make the Mozambique Air Force Mig-21 Bis as flown against Renamo in the 80's and for air intercept duties against the good O'l SAAF.

    I am arming it with for rocket pods in the ground attack role.

    1. The kit is very nice, my main problem being that the main wings were warped and I never really overcame the warping.

    2. Major lesson learned was that Tamiya acrylics dont work so well when thinned with water but seem to work better when thinned with laquer thinners.

    3. Another Major lesson...Humbrol enamels and Tamiya acrylics bubble and wrinkle if sprayed over each other and you have not left them for at least a few days to dry!

    That caused me endless headaches, sanding and respraying and the final product could have been a lot better if I had not done this!

    4. I made lots of little mistakes but all go into the learning curve!

    5. These photos show the aircraft before the pitot tube was replaced after I broke it off by mistake and before the oddrods antenna were replaced above tail fin and below nose which I had also broken off during construction.

    Also various small antenna and rocket pods still to be added.

    6. For the wash I used pastals, burnt umber and dark grey, scraped a little pile of powder from each of them and mixed them both together with a tiny bit of water to get a pasty mush, then painted the whole aircraft with it using a brush. (Aircraft must be gloss).

    After leaving it a few hours to dry, I rubbed the whole thing down with a soft cloth until I had the desired effect and sealed it all in with a few coats of Tamiya satin clear (Aerosol can).

    Photos were taken very hastily on my way to work (offshore) and when I get home in 5 weeks time I will complete the model and post some better photos.

    Underside while still gloss and almost finished cleaning it up to the level of "dirty" that I wanted, gloss done with Tamiya spray can.

  2. I would like to see more 1/32 scale Italian aircraft, from the Fiat Cr.42 up to the SM.71. Italy had many interesting aircraft that they produced during World War Two. Who better to produce kit of the Italian Air force in 1/32 scale than Italeri?

    Agreed, not forgetting MB-326, loads of fantastic colour schemes from African and South American countries, Fiat-G91, Nato and Portuguese wars in Africa and MB-339 again loads of interesting cammo schemes

  3. Also used by Angola, I saw 3 in Luanda in February 2006, they had the same cammo scheme and colours as the Egyptian ones.

    If you look at the wings palette profiles of the Egyptian L-29s, the Angolan ones are the same as the very first 3 view cammo drawing, L-29 Serial: 1503.

    They had no visible national markings and may or may not have had serial numbers in black on the rear fuselage, I could not see clearly.

    1/48 SA 330 Puma

    These are such widely used helicopters in military and civil aviation but there is no 1/48 Puma, only was a now unobtainable fairly rudimentry 1/50 one

    from Heller many years ago.

    And no good kit IN 1/48 was done of the Allouette either, the old Heller and Fujimi ones were poor and are also not easily available so I think new toolings of both these machines is waaayyy overdue!

    I think you missunderstood Laurent, what he said was quote " I won't buy the kits as 1/32 is too big for me", so he is only saying that the scale is to big for him and he does not build 1/32 scale aircraft.

    I would like to thank you for posting those photos of your fantastic looking Jaguars, well done, I cannot wait to get one myself.

    Do you know if a 1/32 scale Mirage F1 will be made in the near future? If its anything like your Jaguar I am sure a lot of people would buy them.

  6. I'm not sure about the Super Etendard canopy, but a couple of days ago I read in post #30 of THIS THREAD that the canopies of the Mirage III and F.1 are identical. So that might be another source. :thumbsup:

    I am happy that the canopies of Mirage 3 and Mirage F1 are the same, but I have doubts about the windshield, to me on the F1 it looks longer and sleeker than n the Mirage 3.

  7. Does anyone here know...would the style / shape of the Super Etendard windscreen match a Mirage F1 windscreen?

    I am considering this as a replacement windscreen for the dismal italeri 1/48 Mirage F1, I don't mind any surgery to make it fit, just wondering

    about the overall shape?

    Serial: 66700 (56-6700)

    This aircraft was built in late 1950's as a U-2A. Converted to a U-2C, it was involved in the Pave Onyx Advanced Location and Strike System trials in 1975, with ALSS orbiting aircraft precisely located hostile radar sites.

    Could you tell me what information that decal sheet gives for the sand and green Mig-23 number "210" , where it was based /operated etc?

    Does it give any info on the Cuban Mig-23's that were sent to Angola?

    Sorry so late with the reply, I lost track of this thread and then forgot about it.

    Most of these photos are prom South African IPMS, photo credits are on the pictures.

    If you enlarge this photo of Cameroon Mb 326 and look at the bottom of the wing tip tank you will see some of the blue grey colour.

    These aircraft were South African built MB326KC Impala MK2 's.

    If you enlarge and look under rear fuselage of this one, you can see underside demarkation line cammo / blue grey.

    The guy who made this impala painted underside 50% Model Master Intermediate Blue FS35164 and 50% Tamiya X2 white.

  12. Hi, this is a a Cuban/Angolan Mig-21 in 1987 in Angola, note the green on the tail, might be of interest to you guys.

    Maybe Acig.orc are also correct.

    I also have a small colour photo of an Angolan Mig-21UM in the standard green / sand cammo, I think it is a much more recent photo.

    I cannot find it right now but if I do I will post it.

    Soulfreak, thanks a lot for the help but my problem is with the single seat Mig-23ML, they all seem to have different cammo schemes, mostly between 3 to 5 colours on upper surfaces.

    I have collected quite a few photos of these aircraft off the net but very few show anything of the upper surfaces.

    Another problem is that the cammo schemes seem to vary widely.

    I know there are 3 views of the Angolan two seat Mig-23 UM, but that cammo is unique to that particular aircraft.

    Any help out there?
