  1. I'm doing a "What-If" of a Ka-50 in Russian Naval colors, using Revell's 1/144 Ka-50 'Black Shark' kit. I've searched the web and what's there is the original set-up. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Actually, I'm doing something very similar with the same kit (a what-if version with Ka-52 gray on gray camouflage). Because the Ka-50's are all undergoing extremely protracted testing, there really isn't any such thing as a "correct" nose. Most Ka-50's have the nose in the kit, or something so close to it that you can't really tell in 1/144 scale. One aircraft (number 18) was tested with first a single large sensor turret and later two sensor turrets. That last configuration referred to as "Ka-50N" (for night capable). If you do a Google search for "Ka-50N", you will get lots of nice pictures of the one you want, including the following:

Also, I have found that a 4mm plastic bead (the kind used in necklaces) is the perfect size for the larger sensor. You can find these easily in craft stores (like Michaels).

Also, the cockpit of a Ka-50N is black (easy to paint!), including the seat. You may want to add a large MFD on the right side of the instrument panel (this display is tall and skinny, not square). If you do a search for the Black Shark computer simulator, you should get some images of what it looks like.

  2. Am I missing something ?

Near as I can tell that's it. I noticed lots of small white stencils on the new paint scheme, but no one makes decals for those, right?

I'd like to do one of these in 1/144 (the Attack MiG-21 is really nice), but I have no idea what to do about the markings, especially the grb.

  3. 9. Speed brakes don't match the contour of the fuselage when closed. And posing them open, unless the aircraft is flying or landing is just plain wrong IMHO.
I am finding this to be the most infuriating problem. Does someone know a way to fix this?

I guess they can be placed very slightly open, which seems common in images of parked A-4's I have seen, but I would like to make it clean if possible.

  4. The best site for modern Croatian aviation pictures I found, which still exists, is Goran Maravic's Flickr site. He also has a picture of the front cockpit of an upgraded MiG-21UMD, which should be similar to the upgraded MiG-21 bis (I don't believe Croatia got the MFDs that the Romanian Lancers did, just the communications and navigation).

Here is the link to the cockpit image (note the box to the right of the HUD):

Here is a forum topic with a number of good images, including a Katsuhiko Tokunaga image of the topside of a MiG in flight which would be helpful in correctly placing the GPS sensor.

  5. That was the 2nd bird the 461st got, 1st was 86-0186. I have never built the Academy 1/72nd E and actually didn't even know them markings where on it, Seeing they are the first E squadron.

    Whos names are on it?

It's "COL TODD COLLINS" and "MAJ HANK JOHNSON" on one side, "TSGT RON WELLS" and "SSGT SYDNEY ALLISSO" on the other.
  6. I really like the Revell 1/144 Harrier, and I was looking forward to building one besides the VMA-231 CAG represented by the decals that come with the kit. I was happy that Cafereo was distributing some new decals for Marine Harriers and I got a set. But they are pretty disappointing. Everything that is black is very sharp, and everything else is a rather noticeable dithering of a few primary colors. Here is a scan of a few decals:

Basically, the darker something is supposed to be, the better the decal. The decals that are supposed to be a lighter gray than the paint behind it are unusable.

I wish more companies made 1/144 decals. It's a bummer to have so few good options.

  7. Until very recently, Japan did not allow anyone to photograph the interior of the cockpit of their F-15's, which includes the equipment bay. This has just been lifted, and you will start to see books which have images. I just got this book in the mail, and it has 3 pages of images of just this bay:

Generally, it looks very similar from the images of American F-15's I have seen (which isn't many). It is painted gloss white like newer American F-15's, with medium gray pipes. The actuator that lifts the canopy is metallic turquoise (that is, the color this bay was in older American F-15's). The racks that hold the black boxes on the port side are all empty. The electronics fixtures on the starboard are mostly the same (grey with black fixtures) except for the third from the front (out of 7) which is all white with three black cubes tacked on (looking about the size and shape of 9 volt AC adapters).

I just checked the parts from an unbuilt 1/72 Hasegawa F-15J, and it is pretty darn close. Basing it off an F-15C would probably be fine unless you are really picky, in which case you should get that book above.

  8. Sorry for being late, but I just stumbled across some information about this aircraft on an unrelated search.

It is an A-4E and it isn't an aggressor. It is an experimental paint scheme for an aircraft in VMA-322 in the late 1970's. Other Skyhawks in VMA-322 had Minutemen on the the side during this time (they were based in Massachusetts), but I think there was only one with this paint scheme.

You can find a black and white image of the other side of this Skyhawk at this web address:
