  1. There's letting his troops have some fun and then there is letting things get out of hand. Sounds like he let things go to far.

    I agree. I just feel for the guy because I don't think he meant any harm. Plus, it's a crappy end to his otherwise damn nice career.

  2. Ah, now I get it. I feel bad for CAPT McWherter. He seemed like a good dude who was just trying to let his troops have some fun. But, he should have known someone would complain. I sure hope that the knee-jerk reaction isn't to rule with an iron fist within the squadron.

  3. I saw on Facebook that the Blues have announced the 2015 team members. Among them was "CDR Bob Flynn", an NFO who is named as the squadron's XO. I thought the Boss served as both the CO and XO. Am I wrong, or did something change?

  4. Whitey said it. Clear both ways anytime you cross any runway, active or not. It looks like the guy in the 76 was handling the crosswind pretty well, so I assume it was a runway incursion that led to his/her decision. But, as has already been noted, this really is no big deal. I've dealt with probably 12-15 runway incursions in my time and train for them at every recurrent event, as does every other pilot out there. I'm not saying someone shouldn't get their wrist slapped for this, but it happens and will continue to happen. Just be ready. "Wave-off, fouled deck"

  5. Interesting. I wasn't aware that there were licensing fees involved. Still, the scale of the model shouldn't affect the fees. Seeing as how they must already be paying the fees for the 1/444 & 1/200, it just seems odd not to scale the jets up to 1/72. But, I do realize they manufacturers tend to know what they're doing.

  6. Why do you suppose that the smaller airliners like the 737 and A320 aren't readily available in 1/72? It's not like they would be that large. Even a 737-800 in 1/72 scale would be smaller that say an F-14 in 1/32 - but there is no shortage of the latter. Plus, it's not like the kits are that complex compared to other 1/72 kits. Again, the 1/72 F-14 kit is far more complex than a 737 would be. Anyway, I'm just curious as to why this is.

  7. Thats right! I had forgotten about that. Actually, I think VF-74 was the only squadron to be formally tasked with the adversary role. I don't remember what exactly happened but the Be-Devilers somehow did not deploy with their normally assigned airwing. The top brass saw it as an opportunity to use them as a training tool for other squadrons. Hence, their snazzy paint schemes.

  8. Topgun, not Top Gun, only used the F-14A. VF-124 Gunfighters however used all three variants at different stages ending with the F-14D.

    You're right, 'Topgun' never flew the Bravos. I was thinking about VF-24 when they had this desert camo on their jets. It put an image in my head of a B model as an adversary. My mistake.

    However, IIRC, VF-124 never flew the Bravo. VF-101 was tasked with training crews on the A and B models, while 124 trained crews on both the A and D until it was decommissioned in 94. Then VF-101 took over at Miramar and did all the training in the D there while all the Alpha training was combined with the Bravo training at Oceana. Then in 96-97, the Navy moved out of Miramar and all F-14 training was done at Oceana.

  9. This is quite possibly the best '72 Tomcat I've seen. My only critique is the red stripes at the top of the NACES seats where the parachute harnesses connect into the headrest. I don't recall those ever being marked red, but I could very well be wrong. But, here is the 102 jet getting ready for "the flight" LINKY and the red does not appear to be there. In any case, marvelous work!

  10. Just realized the chin pods are the same on the Alphas and Bravos. Besides the upgraded engines, what else is the difference between Alphas and Bravos, and what squadrons operated the bravos?

    Some, but probably not all of the upgrades to the B were:

    -F-110 Engines

    -Improved HUD

    -Improved radios

    -Improved RWR

    -Removed glove vanes

    I also think they put in one of those fancy computers to monitor the stress on the airframe, but don't quote me on that. As for the Squadrons that operated the B, here are the ones I remember:

    -VF-11

    -VF-24

    -VF-32

    -VF-32

    -VF-74

    -VF-101

    -VF-102

    -VF-103

    -VF-142

    -VF-143

    -VF-211

    -VX-4

    -VX-9

    -VX-30

    I think Top Gun had a couple B's for a little while but they mainly used the Alphas as adversaries.
