  1. no, the decals with the kit leave a lot to be desired. I'll add a scan of the decals soon so everyone can see what Revell is currently offering. I'm not sure what Revell's thought was with that panel. I'll try scribing it, and if it passes my inspection, than good enough! Upon further inspection of the lower fuselage, there is a provision to remove a section for the ladder. I looked at reference pictures, and it seems like it will work. For some reason, I thought the panel further up on the fuselage was opened for the ladder as well. Since it isn't, this will work. I can make a back panel to f
  2. Thanks again for the help! I'm watching the movie again right now. I noticed the gun vents ARE the old style in the movie...I may try to add some to the blank panel that was extra with the kit before I buy a resin one. Won't hurt to try!
  3. Starting some work on it today. Sanding off the panel lines is pretty painless...I'm sure putting them back will be killer though! I'm not bothering with the bottom of the fuselage between the engines, since that area will not be visible. I do have a few more questions. I wanted to build the kit with canopy open, ladder in place and steps folded down, with Goose in the cockpit, is if they are preparing for a mission. I can scratch build the steps and recesses ok, and the kit comes with a ladder which I think I can detail enough to be satisfactory. However, the kit doesn't provide parts for the
  4. Thanks Darren, that helps BIG TIME!
  5. Thanks for the tip dryguy! I went and looked at the chin pod, and I do believe it is wrong. I posted a picture below. That is something that WILL bother me, and I'd like to replace. I do remember seeing a different style in the movie. Any sources for the right one? I double checked the gun vents, and they supply 2 different parts. I posted a picture below. I believe the one on the left is correct, as the one on the right has NO vents. I also put a picture of the seats that came with the kit, but I will be making a trade for the MK7s. As far as the body shape, I'll just accept the inaccuracies.
  6. Thanks for the tips! I'm not too worried about the shape of the aircraft, since I have no personal experience with them. I've read the posts and reviews about the lack of squared off engines, and the canopy and the nose being mis-shapen. I even looked at some side-by-side comparisons of the kit, and what it should look like. I couldn't see the difference! I don't think I will do any reshaping at all, because I wouldn't know when I had it right, but I am going to scribe the panel lines, probably add some detail to the landing gear, and fab the steps on the side of the cockpit. I decide
  7. I just got the Revell 1/48 F-14D, but I need the seats from the A model. WOuld anyone like to trade straight across??
  8. Thanks for the link! If mine comes out even a fraction of what Cyrus' did, I'll be happy! Well, I started on the cockpit, and encountered my first problem. I'm planning to build Goose and Maveric's plane (I hope that isn't taboo here) and the seats that come with the D are the wrong kind. They don't have the ejection handles overhead. I thought about going out and getting the A model, but that would kind of kill the purpose of buying the cheap kit. I'll probably just accept the inaccuracy, and move on. I plan to display it tied down to a flight deck base. I'd like to add some RBF tags, in ac
  9. I just recently purchased the Revell F-14D 1/48. I really wanted the Hasegawa for the level of detail, but couldn't bring myself to spend that much money, especially considering it doesn't even come with any weapons, necessitating the purchase of an additional $20 worth of Hasegawa stuff. I decided to get the Academy kit, and checking the website of my "local" hobby store, they had one in stock. After over an hour and a half round trip, I returned home empty handed, since they infact did NOT have any Academy kits in stock. They had the Hobby Boss 1/48 there, but it cost more than the Hasegawa.
  10. Thanks for the good info! I had found a few other threads about the sidewinders which talked about the green color with steel fins, but I couldn't find anything about the stripes. Thanks so much!
  11. Hello, Noob here. I'm going to be building an Academy F-14, 1/48. I want to represent the sidewinder, sparrow and pheonix missles fairly accurately. I understand that blue stripes on them means inert round, but what do live rounds have? I'm building to represent late 80's time period. The reference photos I find seem to have a yellow stripe, and a red stripe. What do these colors mean? Thanks
