  1. Hi everyone,

Yesterday I decided to tackle the wingtips lights. The kits instructions make no mention of them at all, but they are there. References were hard to come by, and to make things worse, apparently there is a difference between closely related versions of the 737. As an example, the lights are different between the -700 and -800, which are externally largely the same jet with the biggest difference being that the -700 is shorter. To further muddy the water, there are several light variations on the -800 too. The -800 light configuration is different between the factory built jets with winglets (pictured), and the earlier jets retrofitted with the winglets (not pictured). Thankfully, another modeler over at Airlinercafe.com knew which light version the Eastern 737s used, and sent me a pic of a similarly equipped airframe.

So with one pic for reference, I got to work. It was totally "eyeballed", so hopefully I got close! I used a trick that I had pick up many years ago for making these type of lights that works very well. The first step is to notch out where you want the light (pic 2). I did so using a file. Then you take a chunk of plastic (pic 3) from a kit sprue (for clear lights), or a piece from an appropriately colored toothbrush handle. The chunk is then superglued into the notch. Once dry you can take a larger file, and file off most of the unwanted plastic until you get close. Then sand the rest down with progressively finer grades of sandpaper until it looks like a light (pic 4). For this build I'm going to spray the primer right over the lights, and then polish them out later. They look much brighter after polishing than in the attached pic. This technique works exceptionally well.

So now I'm just about to the point of spraying the primer coat. Hopefully not too many surprises await me, as I'm excited to get this build done! All for now, Fred.

This is just me but, I'd get some Mr. Surfacer White.

    Hi Steve,

I'll probably end up doing that, but I've decided that I am going to give the Tamiya white a test drive on a paint dummy and just see. I am getting excited to get this project done though. Mojo can be a fickle thing 😂 Thanks, Fred.

  3. Hello everyone,

Well after kicking out 6 72nd scale Hasegawa F-16s, 1 SH-60F, and 2 Fujimi Phantoms, my mojo for this kit is flowing again!

I tried something different this time around, and the results were disasterous. I decided to spray some Krylon Fusion white paint & primer straight out of the can on the fuselage thinking that it might help with painting at a later point having the fuselage already white. I did a couple of test sprays on some spare parts, and it worked fine. However, when I sprayed the fuselage, it literally ruined it!  AARRGHHH! Back to the shelf the kit went!  I debated stripping the paint, or sanding it all off. In the end I used both methods. I used paint stripper to remove the paint from the tail as I wanted to preserve as much of the panel lines as possible, and then sanded the fuselage. I worked on this, and rescribing panel lines on and off for months.

After some test fitting, I decided that the fit of the wings to the fuselage was not nearly good enough to allow the wings to be joined after painting. So the wings went on without too many issues, but like most of this kit, a lot of superglue, sanding, primer, more sanding, was involved. The wing root light piece was added and caused its own problem when one of them fell inside the wing and then into the fuselage during test fitting. It took me a full 30 minutes to get the damn thing out again 🤣 Fit on these parts was not too good and required the usual amount of super glue and sanding to get them acceptable.

Next on were the engine pylons, and flap track sponsons. All of which fit reasonably well, requiring only a little Mr Surfacer to fill in the gaps. Speaking of Mr Surfacer..... I recently tried something that I've read about for years, but have been very reluctant to try.... spraying thinned Mr Surfacer through my airbrush. I am currently working on Titan Models 72nd 757-200 kit as well (you can see it in the back ground of the attached pics). The kit is a vacu-form with 3D printed parts. All of which will need to be primed. After assembling and sanding the 757s horizontal stabilizer, I decided to give the sprayed Mr Surfacer a go. It worked like a champ! Okay, I'm an idiot for not trying this sooner! So my question to all of you is this: Should I use the Tamiya white primer that I have to prime the kit, or not take any chances and just order some Mr Surfacer primer white? I've not had the best experience with the Tamiya primer in the past. Perhaps I'll slap a junk kit together and give it a test drive on that. If the Tamiya white works, that would save me a lot of painting later on.

So enough babbling....   here's where things are at now. Thanks for checking in, Fred.

  4. Hi everyone,

I too have been having this same problem when trying to order from ResKit. Every time over the last few days that I've tried to place a $300 order, I kept getting that error message. I finally emailed ResKit and like fellow ARC'er cruiz (post above), they sent me a paypal link to make payment, and it worked just fine. Not sure what the problem is though, but I'm glad the link worked. I couldn't resist stocking up on all of that lovely resin! Fred K.

Just ordered two RF-8A from SprueBros (Gs were out of stock) sprues are the same anyway and don't care much about the kits decals. Waiting to see what comes out of Austin.

Agreed! I ordered three of the G's from Hannants last week as soon as they came out. I too am interested to see what kind of magic Kursad works up for this kit! Fred K.

Hi Fred K! One of my favorite modeling subjects are airliners. My go to gloss white for years was Model Master Gloss White as I liked its "refrigerator white" color along with its adhesion and its ability to be sanded and polished. As my supply of MM Gloss White is about to run out, I have come up with two options that work.

    • Use the small bottles of Testors Gloss White enamel (#1145) that comes in the 7 ml bottles. This seems to be the same or very similar formulation as the larger MM gloss white paint.
    • True North Gloss Artic White enamel (4007) looks to be a great substitute to MM. While I have not finished an airliner yet with this paint as I am using up the last of my MM gloss white, I have shot some test pieces and they look good. A thinner other than the True North brand that works well is Odorless Mineral Spirits from Home Depot or similar store. I met the owner at the IPMS Nats in July and he does know his stuff. Here's the link to the True North website:  https://www.truenorthpaints.com/ . BTW, I bought 4 or 5 bottles of different colors at the show and tested all of them. I will likely make these my default enamel model paints as the MM supply dwindles.

    Have fun modeling!

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the intel! I will check out the True North paints. In the meantime, I have decided to pick up the Tamiya gloss and flat white, and will play around with the mixing them to get the desired sheen that I want.

I have always had a passing interest in airlines, but just couldn't get into 1/144th scale. I model mostly 1950's and later military aircraft in 72nd scale, so the 1/144th scale airliners just weren't fitting in. Although I can certainly see why the smaller scale would appeal to most folks..... those 72nd airliners are big!

But then BPK came out with their line of 72nd 737s and I was hooked on airliners! They really have a lot of "pop" in that scale. Just last night I started separating my Titan Model 757-200 wings and fuselage from the vac backer in preparation for finishing my 737-800. The 757 will be next. I've been eyeballing their big 747 as well...... God what a rabbit hole! 🤣 Thanks, Fred.

Mr Color Leveling Thinner works great with Tamiya lacquers and acrylics.

Sorry the Fusion didn’t work for you.  I’ve had good luck with it, but I don’t think I did a large surface like a 1/72  737 with it.  I mainly used it for smaller models, like a 1/72 Phantom or smaller, or for things like landing gear and wheels.

    Hi Joe,

I haven't completely given up on the Fusion white just yet. I'll de-cant it, and try it that way later. I'm pretty sure that my mistake was shooting it straight from the can. In the meantime, I've picked up some Tamiya gloss and flat white from Sprue Brothers, and will mix them 50/50, and give that a go. Thanks for your input! Fred.

Tamiya LP lacquers are good, but I have found that some enamels don't like to stick to the gloss white (haven't tried any acrylics over it so I can't comment on their adhesion).  The enamels I've had problems with were some Model Master gloss colors (blue angel blue for one), and to a lesser extent Testors gloss red in the small square bottle.  But the LP gives a gorgeous gloss finish.

I've had success with Krylon Fusion gloss white in the rattle can for large areas, but that needs a primer underneath if you've done any body work on the kit as the virgin surface will give a different sheen than any areas that have been worked on (sanded, etc.) and the different is very noticeable.

    Hi Joe,

Krylon Fusion was the paint that I used on the kit that made a big mess. The problem was that I sprayed it straight from the can. It might have behaved better had I de-canted it. Test sprays showed it work good from the can, but on the model... nope! I'm still sanding the fuselage out and have to rescribe a bunch of panel lines after that fiasco!

I'm thinking that I'll go with the Tamiya white laquer. Anything special that I should thin it with? Being a laquer, it should work fine with the MRP Boeing gray color that I'll be shooting on the wings. I've had problems in the past spraying their paint over enamels.  Thanks for the intel! Fred.

  9. Hi all,

I'm getting close to painting my 72nd 737-800, and am struggling to find a good semi-gloss white paint, now that Rustolem (bastards!!) has killed off the Model Master line. A rattle can paint is fine. I tried Krylon's appliance white straight from the can, and was that ever a mistake! I'm still sanding out my 737 after that mess. Suggestions? Thanks, Fred K.

    Hey there Fred,

It may be possible in some releases, but I've only built A's and B's and have never had that part in any that I've purchased so far.  If you do have it, I'd love to arrange a trade of something...

    -A-

    Hi Andrew,

I just looked at the D kit that I have and it looks like the pod is the side by side one. The kits bags are sealed, and I'd like to keep them that way, as there is no way I'll ever build everything in my stash, and will need to do a big sell off at some point. However, the instructions show the part as being a resin part, which isn't in the kit that I can see, so it looks like I might be trying to find one too 😂  Doesn't ResKit or someone make one? So it looks like I'm not going to be able to help you out. Sorry! Fred.

  11. Hi all,

I've got two of the Revell 72nd F-16C Block 50/52 kits, and one of their F-16A MLU kits. I much prefer the simpler Hasegawa Viper kits and thought I'd throw out a trade option before they go to ebay. All kits have their box open, inner bags sealed, and are complete and not started. I am interested in the same condition in trade.

I'd like to trade them, one for one, for either the Hasegawa 72nd F-16CJ/Block 50 kit or the F-16ADF kit. I will also consider the standard F-16C kit.

I'd like to keep any trades limited to the US due to postage costs. I will also sell them outright at $20 each + postage. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. Thanks, Fred K.
