  1. First off, what a great looking Mustang.

And I gave the prop a second look. The blades aren't backward, just the pitch looks set to 0 so the blades look flat.

    Wear on trailing edge??? Whatever.

    Good job Massimo!!

  2. One report on HyperScale was less than favorable. As a matter of fact, he describer the wing as "horrid"!!

Overall, very disappointing. NOT what I was wanting to hear.

Kinda makes me have a 'wait and see' attitude on all Airfix new releases.

  3. Thanks for the help guys. Looks like #3 is the way to go. I'll say this about Hasegawa's P-40s: "Practice makes perfect", especially with the drop in panels and tail parts. My first one had lots of misalignment and gaps. Much better this time...

I'll post results if I can produce an acceptable result.

Just remember that this aircraft operated in the CBI theater under some primative conditions. Use lots of dust and sand blast wear on the prop.

  4. I'm just building Hasegawa's 1/48 kit of this aircraft and would like some confirmation of the colours, if anyone is able to help. I'm thinking there may be three options:

    1. UK colours: Dark Green/Dark Earth/Medium Sea Grey

    2. US equivalent to UK colours: Olive Drab/Dark Earth/Sky Grey

    3. Possible variation to #2: Medium Green/Dark Earth/Sky Grey

It's also possible that I've completely missed the boat and it's none of the above...

    I appreciate any help.

    Nathan.

I'm looking at a color pix of a p-40K from the 51st FG at Kunming China, circa 1943. Tail number is white 255, two yellow stripes around aft fuselage, one yellow stripe just aft of spinner. Star & bar has red surround. Two Japanese kill marks below windshield.

Overall top color is dark earth and dark green. Can't see bottom, but I'd go with Sky Gray. The vertical fin just above the fillet fairing is dark OD??? Looks like the lower 2/3 of the rudder is black, or something very dark.

Overall, aircraft is VERY DUSTY some some clean places where someone's has rubbed the dust/exhaust soot off side of fuselage.

Backside of prop tips has paint wore off past the yellow warning markers.

Aircraft has DF loop on fuselage spine behind canopy.

Now then, it doen't say but I think this is Nollmeyer's bird.

Pix is published in P-40 Warhawk in World War II Color, by Jeffery Ethell.

  5. Well, earlier, there was several post about this subject and after some thought, here's mind.

Top 20 list (All in 1/48th scale):

    1. P-38 Family from Tamiya. Their P-47 series set a whole new standard for kits.

    2. P-40B/C. It’s time Revell/Monogram replace their 50-year old kit. Later releases are still not as good.

    3. F-100D Super Saber. Again, the old Monogram isn’t up to today’s quality. Accurate Miniatures would do nicely.

    4. Mc-200. Hasegawa, it’s a natural for you.

    5. F-80C Shooting Star. Monogram’s is a bit long in the tooth. Rev/Mono or Hasegawa.

    6. Mosquito PR Mk. XVI. Tamiya needs to complete their Mosquito series.

    7. AH-1G Cobra. This one has been skipped over and it was the first true gunship. Hasegawa.

    8. UH-1D/H Huey. Boy, this is one of the most famous aircraft in the world and not given its model dues. Revell/Monogram.

    9. UH-1C Huey. The platform that proved a helicopter could be a gunship. Revell/Monogram, again.

    10. CH-47C ‘Hook. Proved the heavy lift capabilities of the Chinook. Academy.

    11. OH-6A. THE SCOUT. Hasegawa, it’s yours.

    12. OH-13E/G. Trained many helo drivers worldwide. Academy, show Italeri, how to not make the tailboom framing bigger that the skids. (This ends my Vietnam Helicopter series.)

    13. HP Hampden. So unique it must be kitted. Airfix, show your colors.

    14. T-33A. The trainer for the jet age. Revell/Monogram, just do it.

    15. DH Rapide. The most graceful bipe ever, Airfix, do it justice.

    16. Mig 17F. Overlooked by Trumpeter.

    17. Avro Vulcan. Sorry Airfix, nobody does the big ones like Monogram.

    18. F4U-4 Corsair. Tamiya, the next logical Corsair.

    19. Fiat G-55. Italeri, show your stuff.

    20. B-52D. What the heck, (with an X-15 launch mod). Many different paint schemes for this version, Monogram, of course.

  6. Very beautiful job on this kit, Ron.

Saying it's AMT's Tigercat is kinda like describing Grand-dad's old hammer. Five new handles and two new heads, but it's grand-dad's old hammer.

With all the Cutting Edge and other kit updates, not much left to be AMT!!

If Tamiya would make a SOTA Tigercat and fetched $75 per copy, it'd still be a bargin by not having to buy all those updates, but what would we do with all that extra time?? LOL

    Again, great work, Ron.

  7. Hey Markm1245,

Many thanks, that is exactly what I was after. I'm building Revell's 1/32 and converting it into an H' model.

What timefame and country of orgin Hotel Huey are you building?? Hope not the US Vietnam Hueys.

  8. Check out Attilio's fantastic looking Monogram P-47D. Goes to show that a real modeler/artist can make the ole Mongram kit looking like the very best. Atta boy Attilio!!

Wish Monogram/Revell would start making great models like they did then but with today's standards. Monogram took careful measurements of any subject and then the kit had to pass the Mk.I eyeball test, too. That's why they were the industry leaders and can be again.

That said, the old kits took a real artist, like Attilo, to bring out the best in them.

  9. General tip, for veteran warbirds, shoot some clear flat on all top surfaces to remove some of the gloss. The surfaces not bearing the baking sun can remain more glossy and darker.

I judged a contest once when a beautiful Monogram P-61 with numerous mission marking was entered looking like it just came outta the factory. Not even dusty.

Also, DON'T over kill the weathering!! These are aircraft and NOT tanks!! Show lite chips on panels that are opened daily like around the engine and ammo bays. DON'T put chips way out on the wing tips and fuselage unless that are hatches that are opened often.

Some of the harshes treated aircraft are Army helicopters, and they DO NOT have big chips of paint flaked off. I use a silver Prisma color pencil around hatches and panels to show slight wear.

Most paint chips are mechanic/crew chief induced. Belt buckles, tools dropped, and etc.

  10. Sorry, none of my pics show a number on top of the front fuselage or cowl ring.

The wing stripes are command stripes. I think it's 4 = group commander, 3 = deputy group commander,

2 = squadron commander and, maybe, 1 for a flight leader.

    Barry

    Thanks, Barry.

    Bo

  11. Do any of your photos have the A/C number on the on the upper part of the forward engine cowl, not the cowl ring? I've seen one.

Also, Aircraft in Profile by Peter Bowers, shows aircraft No. 11 with two dark stripes on the wing, front to rear, just outboard of the landing gear. Seen any other pics like that?? What does it mean?

    TIA,

    Bo Roberts

  12. I have some info about P-26's nothing close at hand though. I see what I can dig up when I get sometime. If I don't post anything here over the next few days, then shoot me a PM to remind me.

    Ron

Thanks, Ron. Any help is appreciated.
