  1. Is there anyone currently making the 'sugar scoop' intakes for behind the wing trailing edges on 1/48 Canadair Sabres? I know of at least two in the past, but both are long OOP.

Is the AMS set OOP? They are currently showing out of stock at Sprue Brothers but the 1/32 set is in stock.

  2. Hi Tom, Happy New Year

I don't know of any other 48th Vought seats. AMS did one in 32nd but I don't think Harold ever did it in 48th. A more readily available Vought seat would be good, and a good Martin Baker F5 as well.

    Cheers,

    Hi Tom,

I just heard back from Harold a short time ago. He said he did start one several years ago but never finished it. I think he should finish it as his 1/32 seat looks really nice. In your opinion what is the best rendition of the F5 and F7 seat in 1/48?

    Cheers,

    Tom

  3. I know that Muroc Models does a Vought seat in 1/48 and I've got one coming with my F-8A conversion, but is there anything else out there? I know AMS Resin has one in 1/32 but I don't know if Harold ever did it in 1/48.

    Cheers,

  4. Hi Fred,

The only reason I posted the Turkish F-5B was to point out how easy it is from a low angle to see the lower scoops and arrestor hook. And yes, Greece got its F-5's from all over.

Take a look here for a list of s/n's for IIAF F-5 types.

    http://www.iiaf.net/aircraft/jetfighters/F5/f5.html

The article I have posted mentions 12 F-5A's acquired from Iran in 1974, the year of the Cyprus conflict (July, 1974 apparently was when the engagement with the Turkish F-102's took place). So, as 63-8414 doesn't fall within the range of s/n's of F-5's delivered to the IIAF, then 63-8414 must have been from the original batch of 52 F-5A's received brand new (except for one apparently) from the USA. All of the other F-5's transferred to the HAF occurred well after the conflict. All of this assuming correct and accurate data.

The list of Greek F-5 serial numbers comes from a magazine on the Greek Air Force, 1951-1969. The section on the F-5A is 13 pages but unfortunately the whole magazine is in Greek.

  5. Thanks for the open-box view and Muroc's detail.I see that decals are included in the SCW box.I'm more interested in "classic" Crouze, -8A and -8C, is it the same for them?To my knowledge, there's some aftermarket decals for the C, but not for the A.

I don't know of any decals for an F-8A either. Furball does an F-8 Mig Masters sheet in 1/72 and 1/48 which covers several F-8C's and F-8E's. I believe there is even the odd F-8D and F-8H in there too. Cutting Edge also did a 1/48 set for an F-8C of VF-84.

  6. Where do you guys buy them from?

    -Dave

    Dave,

I purchased mine directly from David Newman. He doesn't have a web site so we usually just post his email addy so that you can contact him directly. It's newmanispwest at yahoo dot com. I also believe you can/could get them from The AFFTC gift shop but I don't know anything about how that works.

    Cheers,

    Tom

  7. Fred,

The photo below looks like it might be taken from an ever-so-slightly higher elevation than the two above, yet you can easily see the lower cooling scoop and arrestor hook. I don't know if the HAF F-5's were delivered with the Northrop seat or not, but at some point they had the MB Mk.10 as shown in my first post. I know that there are guys here who will be able to answer this with more clarity than I.

  8. Kind of curious too. Muroc Models isn't known for quality castings IIRC.

I wouldn't agree with that, necessarily. I have his 1/48 F-8C and 1/72 DFBW conversions. I have the left/right nose halves of the 1/48 F-8C conversion attached to the Hasegawa F-8E fuselage and the resin detail is every bit as good as the original kit plastic and they lined up perfectly. I am going to be buying his 1/48 F-8A conversion and am also considering the 1/72 F-8 SCW set as well. The two sets that I do have look great.

  9. Hi Fred,

Two minutes after a quick Google and here is 63-8414. In this view it's possible that the lower cooling scoops might be hidden by the missile fins "if" they were there as they are located on the lower fuselage at the trail edge of the flaps, forward of the upper scoops. I have included a photo of 63-8422 which shows that they were not there. I think these two photos will answer your questions with the exception of colour scheme.

    Cheers,

    Tom

  10. Thanks, I'll try to order those conversions.

You should have no problem getting Murocs F-8C conversion. I just got an updated product list from David yesterday and it's still available. He now has an F-8A conversion in 1/72 and 1/48 available, too. I believe Hasegawa is scheduled to re-release the Crusader.

    Cheers,

    Tom

  11. Can the 48th scale Hasegawa F-8E be made into an F-8C. If so what does it take?

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Dave,

The only way to do it is with the F-8C conversion from Muroc Models. I believe you get everything you need except for a correct version ejection seat and the proper internals for an F-8C speed brake bay as the F-8C had a rocket pack in the speed brake bay. If you don't get an aftermarket speed brake set to show it opened then this is not something to concern yourself with. These last two items you'll have to source elsewhere. That I know of only the Cutting Edge F-8 speed brake set gave you all the necessary bits for all versions of the F-8 and it's out of production. Contact David Newman for further details/availability on his F-8C conversion at newmanispwest at yahoo dot com.

If you would like some images of the conversion just send me a PM.

    Cheers,

    Tom

  12. Where'd you buy yours? Mine actually arrived with the box flattened and the kit bags separate which had me worried, but all was pristine, that was from HobbyTerra. Also bought a Yak-28, that was delivered in the same fashion, but here the box had never even been folded and assembled from the factory it seems.

I got mine from DMC Models.

  13. This is the state I found my kit in after picking it up this morning from the post office and having a look see. The extreme front corner of the lead edge of the upper right wing was broken off and there was also a piece broken off of the rear of the wing fairing on the upper left wing. Both of these pieces were found in the box. Also note the hole in the right fuselage half and the tear in the plastic. The hole can be patched from the inside and filled. The tear should be repairable by liquid glue and then holding closed. The main wings, horizontal tails and vertical tail have lots of scratches/marks in them, no doubt from sliding around due to poor packaging. Removing them will require a determined and careful polishing. The lower right wing is bent so bad that when I lay it on the upper wing and hold it upside down there is a 1 inch gap at the front corner where that small piece is broken off but the upper is sound as a pound. The upper and lower left wings have bends and twists in them also. Luckily for me I know how to boil water! I should send these pictures to Modelsvit, too.

Have a good look at your kit when you get it.

    Cheers,

    Tom
