UKPonchoMan
Hi guys I'm in the process of rebuilding a KC-135 and have a question about the rear fuselage strengthening strips - when were these applied? I've recently seen some pics of early -135s which don't appear to have these straps? Chris
Jennings
Starting sometime around 1959-60. They were applied on the assembly line on all but the very earliest 135s, so I know it was fairly early on. The J-57 engines produced so much sonic turbulence (especially on water injected takeoffs) that they quickly found out that aft fuselage skins were cracking as a result. The fix was applied to all members of the family, even the turbofan engined versions.
