  1. It's an emergency proceedure, that can save lives and airplanes. It's slow because you are pumping fuel uphill.
  2. Thanks very much. The article was excellent. I'm also trying to confirm part of the story of the mission. I understand that one of the escorting KC-10 tankers had a problem with it's refueling boom ,and could not refuel the F-111s. Since the total amount of fuel was critical, the damaged KC-10 was able to upload his fuel to another KC-10 using "reverse refueling". Reverse refueling allows the airplane on the receiving end of the boom to use it's pumps to pump the fuel back up the boom. to top off the tanker's fuel tanks, and not lose access to any critically needed fuel.
