  1. Unfortunately you won’t get a reply. Yuri posted this 5 years ago and hasn’t been back since September of 2013. I’m sorry I cant help but maybe you could start a new thread asking for reference photos and fixes. I’m sure someone has addressed this same problem on their kit and would chime in.

  2. I found this one on a forum that 68-0274 wore in Plattsburgh. The thread mentioned it was positioned behind the WSO canopy. I found on another blog that she did indeed wear this nose art but Unfortunately I can’t find a pic of 274 sporting “Missouri Miss” to confirm. One SIOP scheme and one Dark Vark scheme I came across both show 274 with no nose art, no apple just basic markings.7MmEr4.jpg

  3. Great news Kursad!! Can’t wait to see some profiles 😁

I kinda agree, the SIOP jets could easily fill up another sheet entirely. Plus the “Caracal Dark Varks” sheet has a nice ring to it!

Btw, any luck getting the Plattsburgh nose art close ups? I’ve found several of “Queen Hi” and “SAC Time” but they are all taken 50 yards away and less than desirable for drawing.

I think I speak for most of the guys awaiting this product, in that we are glad that it was you and Caracal Models who chose this subject. We’re excited since all your other sheets have been next level and this one will surely be no different.

Looks like a white circle background on “Top Secret” 69-6513

These are the best two color I could find. Not sure if the clip art will convert but you might be able to get it off the B-29.

“Next Objective” was posted earlier and that was the best also.

As far as Plattsburgh jets go there aren’t many if any close ups of the nose art I can find. Maybe some guys will come across personal photos like Raptor01 did of “Top Secret” on a different thread.

One thing to mention is it seems that the art was applied to both left and right nose gear doors, not just one side like I thought.

Done! 'Liberator II" (68-0287) is also added to the artwork.

Next, I would like to add "Next Objective", "Top Secret" and "Straight Flush" to the sheet, and then move on to the Plattsburgh jets (most likely "Net Results" and 'A Wing An' 10 Prayers").

Ship 287 is interesting because she now resides at the Wings over the Rockies museum in Denver.

If you look just above the USAF and serial number on the stab you can see where the New Hampshire Ol’ man was painted over when she left Pease.

  7. A76RCd.jpgThis is a cropped picture I took of the cockpit door last month on a visit to the SAC museum in Omaha. I should have focused on the markings but I had no idea.

This will be easier to convert but more work to change colors and text.

  8. Glad we could assist!

While researching the apple it seemed like in most cases the sword pointed forwards until I came across the pic of 249 above which debunked that theory. Maybe it would be worth including 4 apples total, 2 left and 2 right to cover all possible combinations?

    Either way, great work!

Feel free to reach out for other missing bits, these guys on here are an amazing resource!

  9. Very nice! Glad we could help but I think we all are learning a bunch about FB thanks to you starting this thread!

  10. I stand corrected, it’s not 508, it’s ship 513 “Top Secret”

John! Those are priceless shots! Thanks for sharing.

I went to every open house from 1986 till Pease closed, man those great.

That looks like ship 508 “Strange Cargo” with the SRAM and B61, obviously a loadout strictly for the “civilian folk” right?wVQj0r.jpg

So basically all these guys knew they were training for a one way trip, amazing!

The article above is about fighters on Victor alert in Europe and their evolution through the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Super interesting. But down at the bottom there is a short piece from a pilot who said they would navigate towards a target with an eye patch covering one eye, with nukes going off all around at least you would have two shots at hitting the target. He made no mention of navigating home.

Nice pic Hooker!  Quite the rarity,  I'm guessing that was an "informal" shot, since it was probably forbidden to take pics of alert birds with live weapons.

I know the answer is impossible to know for sure but any speculation on what it would have carried internally?   2 more B43's or SRAM's?

I know the operational B-61s are silver; these B-43s look to be painted white ?

Would this be their operational colour, or are these 'drill rounds' for load-handling training ?

We’re assuming these are operational weapons. Could it be an alert drill? Possibly, but the presence of both boarding ladders and air start cart tells me its an actual alert jet being discretely photographed by one of its ground crew warming up in a crew van.  Like 11bee and another ARCer said, these pictures are extremely rare and the mere possession of a camera around alert aircraft and weapons would bring a world of hurt down on you.

  13. I think it would interesting to see what a typical alert mission profile would have been. How many ships? Where and how many times do you have to tank to get to Eastern Europe or Soviet Union. As far as after weapon delivery what then? Obviously the world just completely changed since we took off so where are we flying back to, stopping for fuel, tanking?

Just trying to put myself in the crews shoes for a moment; you’re on alert taking off for most likely a one way mission knowing that one way or another you’ll never see your wife and kids again and still maintaining your ability to think through critical issues throughout.  Truely unimaginable.

People sometimes scoff at the term Cold War Veteran. I personally think these folks did more to secure global peace than any since WWII.
