  1. This is the 2nd F-4J to be added to the illustration I've been working on. I still have to add the weps. The illustration, so you can place this in context... It still needs some tweaking. Regards, Stephen
  2. Greetings all, This one's for the scooter fans (me included). Happy A-4C day. Regards, Stephen
  3. Gregg, I suspect that impression you are getting is based on the dimensionless aspects of the illustration. In some cases I have simplified the complexity of elements or omitted highlighting the tops of certain elements because those highlights would be only 1 pixel wide and would not be discernable at the actual viewing distance on the print. Due to time constraints, at present, if it cannot be detected by the human eye on the print, I have not taken the time to illustrate it. The large detailed images here look featureless as a result, I think. With more time available I will go back
  4. Greets all, This is one of 3 fits of the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42) that I'm doing for the FDR Association. I have about 40 hours in this, so far. This is the 1951 version, I'll be doing her in 1961 and 1971 as well. Now some of my a/c profiles will have a place to roost The Boat The Island 5 inch 54s. The bear in doing this is trying to get photos of what the bulkheads looked like behind the guns, even with all the refs I have on this. Regards, Stephen
  5. Gene, it is an Aviation Art (actually other genres are represented, too) forum run by Felixdk. http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/mb/felixdk Email is inbound yours. I offer up an Irish toast to your hard drive. Stephen
  6. But Neu, you've had the benefit of seeing this evolve in the Cat2 forum . Regards, Stephen
  7. Gregg, I understand, I've used render this way as well, but I've been getting emails from people that thought this was CGI. It was for that reason, primarily, that I posted that comment. Thank you for the compliments, too. Regards, Stephen
  8. Another update. I worked on the background and changed the foreground cloud to give it more whitespace. Here's a closeup crop of the pilot. I left off the yellow pinstripe stars on the helmets because you can't see them in the picture in the normal print size. Regards, Stephen
  9. Well that's an easy one for me, F-14A BuNo 159428. The VF-33 Batmobile AB201 from 1982. It's my bird (my paintscheme, both design and layout). Photo courtesy U.S. Navy, via my collection To me all others pale by comparison. Regards, Stephen
  10. Here is some snout detail. I still have to add the LRU-9A5 Gunsight and the weather this bird. For the record, this is not a CGI render. Anyway... Regards, Stephen
  11. Don, That skipper reminds me of an Outer Limits (the original series) episode for some reason. Must have lots of traps on one 'o' them nuke boats with poor containment on the reactor. My dad was in VF-31 back when I was spawned. Felix is no stranger to our home. Regards, Stephen
  12. Bill , Gregg, Thankyou. Gregg it gives me shivers to be where that photographer is shooting from on your banner. I saw a saftey film in the Nav where a cross deck pendant snapped and the whiplash sliced thru a nosestrut and then cut a guy in half. They were in the corral behind the island. Here's the bird with a Sparrow added. Regards, Stephen
  13. Don, Is your pilot smiling!!?? Who authorized that? Tell him to knock it off, this is supposed to be a serious aviation art forum. Stephen
  14. Actually, VF-33 carried this scheme for 5 years. They were just not well publicized. But they were a working man's squadron. In the 6+ years I was with VF-33, we beat our sister squadron, VF-102 Diamondpigs in every missile shoot we flew in. That translates into having the best overall fire control radar availability out of the 2 squadrons. We were good where it actually counted. Here's a test fit of the a/c to the background. There will eventually be a wingman added. Regards, Stephen
  15. Illustration progress update....cockpit elements are crudely roughed in. I'll refine them next. I revised the rearview mirrior postition. Weathering will be up soon. Too bad, this is the cleanest I've ever seen one of these birds. Oh well, thanks to all for the nice comments. Regards, Stephen
  16. See, If you chose a subject with flush rivets, you'd be home by now I think you are doing a stellar job on this, Don. Regards, Stephen
  17. Now you cut that out Stephen
  18. My latest project thus far. This and another '33 F-4 will populate an already completed background. A crop of tail detail The bird is an unmanned glider at the moment, as I still have to do the canopy/cockpit and the J-79 turkey feathers (plus weathering and a Sparrow in the aft station). Don, Your F3F is just beautiful. :P Regards, Stephen
  19. I never made the assertion about HE2K. If you reread my post carefully, I told Neu that not all Hawkeyes (.) carried the tint (specifically, over the entire life of the E-2 program). I know he has plans to do earlier E-2s, this is the help him out in rendering those earlier a/c). OSHA at work during the Clinton administration, I guess. So what's a little RF between friends;) Regards, Stephen
  20. Spongebob, I stand by my statement, I have seen E-2Cs launch, without the gold tint. And again, I have lots of photographic evidence, along with personal experience that confirms the fact that gold tinting was not used commonly on E-2s prior to 1991. NATOPS gets revised when AFCs occur all the time. I can email you samples off board if you'd like or provide a bibliography. Regards, Stephen
  21. Neu, All I can say is check for photos of the a/c you are doing, that's what I do. Or find photos of the a/c in the same time frame of your particular subject. If you are serious about your work you should get good reference books. As for specific time when the gold tinted windows came into being on the Hawkeye I cannot answer that, I do see a change somewehere between 1991 and 1997. Independence (2 cruises & 2 sets of workups) & America (1 cruise plus 2 sets of workups & NATO cruise) I was attached to VF-33 for 5+ years. Regards, Stephen
  22. Neu, The E-2's side cockpit window was not always tinted, so be mindful of that when you are depicting specific time frames. Yes I'm aware of the bulged window, I spent 3 years at sea on 2 different Carriers, working on the roof. One tends to learn these things when one works around this stuff constantly. But things do change over time, too. It was the brilliance of the tint that prompted the comment. I also know that MS uses photo elements in his artwork. Some others here do as well. I don't. Regards, Stephen
  23. My apologies, Neu, I thought it posted. I should check these replys, better. Anyways, reall nice job. The wind screen/side blister window reminded me of Mark Styling's E-2s. I have E-2s on my to do list as well. Good subject .

    PTO PBY-5A

but in a great scheme, IMHO. I'll eventually oilcan the fuse to give this baby some character when time permits fooling around some more. Cheers to the lot of you! Stephen
