    Looking forward to this build!

Thanks Janissary, it's good to have you here!

Well, got the cutting done and sanded strategically to fit the shoulders.

The left side is done and the fit is going to be quite good, should only need a little bit of filler up top and a bit more on the underside. Still working on the gun side, the shape is a bit more complicated on that side so I still have more sanding to do to get a consistently good fit top and bottom, but I will get there.

This has gone quite well so far, not the monster I was fearing LOL. Actually, this has been kinda fun to do, almost like a puzzle that I need to make fit.

So I do still need to do some cutting of the exhaust area for the AMR nozzles, and still need to figure out what I will do with the cockpit IPs and HUD.  I might try to do some scratch building of the IPs.

  2. I have started preparing for the cutting of the fuselage for the resin shoulders for the canards.  This is going to be fun.  LOL  I hope I don't screw this up!

I also am thinking about using the canards from a bad sprue (short shot) from my Kinetic Su-33, which was kindly replaced by Kinetic. It looks to be the same size and very similar riveting, although the shape is very slightly different.  Does anyone know if there is a difference between the Su-33 and Su-30 canards?  If not, I will use the Kinetic.

Also, here is a pic of the small bits included in the Naza set...

But does it include the MKM/MKI style cockpit displays? I've been following the Naza conversion development and know his builds have the cockpits on FB but they don't seem to be shown in the package contents.

I had to scratch some for my 1/48 MKI prototype.

Sadly, it does not.  I have been thinking about what to do there, but I am not much of a scratch builder.  But I may see what I can come up with.  Thanks for posting those pics of your work, very impressive!

Another issue is the Thales HUD.  I can't seem to find any good pics of it.  The best cockpit pics of the MKM have a red cover over the HUD.  I wonder if it is similar to the one on the Su-30SM?  There are lots of good pics of that one, and from what I can see from outside shots of the MKM it looks very similar.  I do know Thales and Sukhoi did have some cooperation at some point...

Ohhh this is gonna be awesome!!! I have the kit in my stash to build an MKI, just waiting on Cold War Studios to finish their upgrade conversion.

Welcome Zach!  Thanks, I hope I can do this awesome aircraft justice!

I too am waiting on the CWS conversion.  I will do a Su-30SM some day with it, unless some manufacturer announces a kit in the meantime... which is probably not likely.  LOL

You are right dear Ken! 🙂

but on the 04 we can see an antena on his top fuselage. As on the mkm...

so im a bit lost between mki mkm... 🙂

    cheers

Welcome rom!  Yeah, it can be a bit difficult to discern all the different details between these Flankers.  But specifically for the MKM, Berkut posted a fantastic pic that shows all the unique features of the MKM in a post awhile back, so I am going to steal it and post here since it will be rather relevant to this build and may be of use to anyone following along that is planning to build one of these in the future...

Don't you mean the Hobby Boss Su-30MKK ???

You are starting with an MKK (Modified (updated), Kommercial (Export), Kitei (China)).... and ending up with an MKM (Modified, Kommercial, Malaysia).

    Happy Flankering

    Ken

Oops, that is definitely a typo.  I did get it right in the title though!  LOL

I corrected it, thanks for the heads up!

  7. Hey everyone!

Well, I haven't done an in-progress thread in awhile, but since this project is my first real conversion (and one of my favorite aircraft), I thought I would do one for this... Besides, I may need some support and may have some questions along the way.  🙂

So the base kit for this is the Hobby Boss Su-30MKK, and I will be using the Naza Model Art Su-30MKM conversion set.  I also have Fishbone decals for this aircraft.  I will also be using a L'Arsenal Aero Damocles pod, AMUR Reaver Thrust Vectoring Exhausts, Master Model Pitot, and Neomega seats.

I routinely use hardware store lacquer thinner to clean my airbrush. I transfer lacquer thinner from a gallon can to an 8oz jar to keep it handy while painting.

I never use that stuff for thinning paint, however.

Same here.  I use that stuff to clean out pretty much everything from my airbrush.  It pretty much instantly clears it out.  I usually run some IPA though after though just to kinda flush the system of residual thinner, but I dunno if that is really necessary.

As far as spraying future, I have never been able to get a good finish through an airbrush.  But I do get a fantastic smooth finish by brushing it on.  It's self leveling properties give a very nice, even finish that way, and it is very fast using a somewhat wide brush.  Two coats is enough, and over some paints one is plenty.

  9. Hi all!

I would like to share one of my latest completed projects, the 1/48 Academy U-2S Dragon Lady.  I actually finished this one about a month or so ago.  This kit consists of parts from the old Hawk molds (from well before I was even born!) with updated parts to make a modern Sierra.  So it goes without saying that this kit contains raised panel lines.  So I decided to go ahead and rescribe all of the panel lines, which I have never done before.  Let me just say, I am not so sure I will ever do this again!  I really HATE doing it, and I am pretty much terrible at it.  I found that I sometimes had to force myself to the bench for a modelling session that I knew was just scribing.  But, alas, I pushed through it.

I used some aftermarket on this one, which included a Cutting Edge ASARS II nose, Pavla Cockpit set,  and Caracal Decals.  The nose required a little work to fit, but nothing terrible.  The cockpit is very nice and dropped pretty much right in, and the decals used were quite sparse, but performed quite nicely.

Overall, I am happy with the end result, however I am quite aware this is not my best effort.  The re-scribing just sucked the life out of my interest in this kit, and just kinda went though the motions to get it done.

Here is what I used on this build:

    Kit: 1/48 Academy U-2S  #12307

    Decals: Caracal U-2R/S & ER-2 CD48126

Aftermarket: Cutting Edge ASARS II Nose, Pavla Cockpit Set

Paints: Gunze Mr. Surfacer Grey 1200 (primer base),  Gunze Aqueous FS 36118 Gunship Gray and H2 Glosss Black, Tamiya Rubber Blackand Alclad II Gloss Black Primer, Airframe Aluminum, and Burnt Iron. Future Gloss coat for decals and Future+Tamiya XF-21 Flat Base 6:1 ratio for final matte coat. Molotow Liquid Chrome also used.  Mig Ammo Deep Gray panel wash.

Without further ado, here are the pics, hope you like!

  10. Hi all!

I would like to share my latest completed project, the 1/48 Great Wall Hobby F-15C from the MSIP II ANG boxing.  I decided to build it in the fantastic splinter camo markings of the 65th AGRS circa 2013.  The camo was done without a mask, using Tamiya tape and just kinda eyeballing it.  I started by painting the gray, then masking and painting either the white or blue areas one at a time.  Some areas were easier to paint the white over the blue, and others the blue over the white.

I used some aftermarket on this one, including a Quickboost seat, Meng CATM Aim-9M from the short range weapons kit, and the ELTA-8222 and ACMI pods from the Meng long range weapons set.  For decals, I actually had three options to choose from, the Two Bobs "Digital Flanker" set, Afterburner "65th Aggressors" sheet, and the Speed Hunter Graphics "Elegant Eagles" sheet.  I wanted to do Blue 94, so that eliminated the Afterburner sheet which does not include that option.  Between the Two Bobs sheet and the SHG sheet, the color saturation and stencils were nicer on the SHG sheet, and being Cartograf printed sealed the decision for me.  This is the second time using SHG decals (F-4G was the other), and they performed fantastically once again.  Big fan of their products!

The GWH kit is much lauded, and for good reason.  It is just a fantastically detailed kit, and fit is generally excellent throughout.  Rear fuselage and intakes take the most care, but nothing major to note.

Here is what I used on this build:

Kit: 1/48 Great Wall Hobby F-15C Eagle MSIP II ANG boxing

Decals: Speed Hunter Graphics "Elegant Eagles" sheet

Aftermarket: Quickboost Ejection Seat, Meng Short-Range Weapons Set, Meng Long-Range Weapons Set

Paints: Gunze Mr. Surfacer Black 1500 (primer base),  ModelMaster FS35109 International Blue, Gunze Aqueous FS 36118 Gunship Gray, Mr Paint FS 36251 Aggressor Gray and FS 36628 White Gray, Tamiya Rubber Black, Clear Red, Clear Yellow, and Smoke, and Alclad II Gloss Black Primer, Airframe Aluminum, Pale Burnt Metal, and Burnt Iron. Future Gloss coat for decals and Future+Tamiya XF-21 Flat Base 6:1 ratio for final matte coat. Molotow Liquid Chrome also used.  Mig Ammo Deep Gray panel wash.

  11. 17 hours or 17 months, this is still a beautiful build Darren.  The fact you built this in such a short time is a testament to both your skills and the marvel that is the Tamiya Tomcat kit.  I have only one word for you...

    Noooooooice!!!!!!!

  12. Wonderful work there Adam!  I tend to be drawn toward the blue camo'd Skyhawk Adversary aircraft, and this one is right on point.

I dig your build info listed with pics.  It is a nice for easy reference for someone that wants to do a similar build in the future, like me.  😉 I do the same with my builds as well.

Thanks bud, I really appreciate the kind words and support.  I am glad you like it!

I'm building VFA-86's history for them right now. I just finished the F-18C and am working on the F-18E. I used the C markings with big snake head on the tail. If you really want it to go to the squadron, I could give you my contact's address and you could send it to him. The only thing I caution about is that, as I've learned from experience, sometimes they grow legs and walk. I've had to replace a couple of builds from other squadrons I've done.

After some though I think I will just keep it here, despite the honor it would be to give it to them.  I have never shipped a model before, and worry about the logistics of such an endeavor.  Besides, it looks like you are giving them quite the sweet supply jets of their history!

Congrats! The weathering is just how i like em the most. That huge yellow diamond gives some sense of a huge GPS antenna 🙂 Very nice!

Facebook looks to be the only way. He does PayPal and I just requested shipping info to the USA. He charges around $20 to ship to Europe.

Matt Foley, Would having him send 2 sets help with shipping costs? I'm in WI too, and would be happy to split the shipping w you. (And pay to get mine from you to me)

    Thoughts?

    Matthew

Mr Matt Foley, you mind if an non-WI (Ohio) guy gets in on this?  I really would like to get one of these sets too.  If you don't feel comfortable doing that perhaps I can buy the sets and ship them out to you guys...

I guess it depends on how much his shipping is for one set to the US and how much it would be to send three...
