1. Thanks for the link Merlin, judging from the Italian Navy MM81495 that VH-71 Test Article is actually the 4th Italian Navy ASH EH-101 (the first being MM81492 in the pictures above).

I also did not notice that the Cormorant model has the single wheel main gear bogies, thanks for the suggestion.

One more thing to remember is that the Marina Militare's EH-101 main rotor blades cuffs are of a different design from their RN counterparts.

  2. Howdy, the Italian Navy has procured 8 (plus 4 options to be equipped for CSAR) of the ASH ramp equipped EH-101. As far as I know at least one has been delivered and was on display at Le Bourget last year.

There are a quite a few pictures on airliners.net and they are all very good for details.

To find the pictures make a search for "Italy-Navy" in the Airlines section. The best model would be a compromise between the RAF Mk.3 and the Cormorant variant (Cormorant is best, but it needs a side entrance door job).

I am looking forward to model all three main variant ordered by the Italian Navy.

  3. I am surprised the Australian gov'ment is willing to purchase a single engine aircraft considering the ranges involved and the fact that most of the stuff is water down there!

If more people (read Countries) were willing to think outside the box (read USA) and discuss matters with other manufacturers of advanced fighters/tranports (read MIG, Sukhoi, EFA agency and Dassault) and shift the volume of purchases, the US Industrial Lobby would either sharply refine their costs down or even the US Government would cut their purchases.

  4. For the record

The A-109A was the first version, it did go into production and it's in my logbook. It was powered by a pair of Allison 250-C20Rs.

The A-109C version, introduced WX radar and had a slightly redesigned nose to accomodate it, mainly a tad longer with a different position of the landing lights, that one too is in my logbook.

The Swiss REGA Rescue Organization issued an RFP for a twin engine Rescue Helicopter that could operate at extreme altitudes and could persorm hoist operations, Agusta redesigned the 109 with a fixed landing gear (similar to the early military ones) and used Arriel engines, larger than the Allisons (now Rolls Royce) they required a redesign of the engine cowlings.

The 109E or Power is almost a new helicopter; the rotor head is different, the blades are different, the transmission and the engines are as well, pretty much the whole drive train has been redesigned. The landing gear now retracts under the belly and it articulates at the end of two stub "wings".

This redesign vastly increased interior space and made it a very popular aircraft with EMS services around the world. Also the new engines (P&W 206Cs and now 207s in the "Grand") cured the chronic hot and high and single engine performance problem of the early versions (except for the K models).

Military versions were strictly a derivative of the civilians, with various sensor appendages attached to the roof or other places. The LUH for SA and Sweden is nothing but a derivative of the Power.

    Cheers. :thumbsup::touche:

  5. Hi there Clumber. The news from Seattle are saddening and my thoughts go out to the families of the lives lost. I am in the same job line, but I fly in Texas.

ALNW in Seattle flies Agusta 109E Powers, they are replacing their older A-109Cs.

Interestingly, there is a nicely die cast model in larger scale, but it comes in USCG colors.

The only other kit I can think of is relative to a different version of the 109 (A-109 K) and it would require a lot of work to bring it to look like a Power.

    Regards, Roberto.

  6. Mmmmh, I thought A-Model was to release a late Mi-6 next and then they had (judging by the sprues) an Mi-10 in their plans.

With a 1/35 Ch-47 (or two) in the pipeline from Trumpeter and the rumors of a 1/48 CH-53E by Academy it's going to be a bumper year for big helicopter models.

Who's going to tackle the Mi-12?
