  1. On the 1/48 Hasegawa F-4J kit ("Showtime 100", P1 / 07101), there are two different sets of main landing gear wheels. The kit instructions have you assembling two halves, and these wheels look to be of the wider/fatter variety. Is this correct for a J model? (I am doing VMFA-235 circa early to mid-1970's.)

    Thank you all.

Thanks MA, I was hoping to avoid doing that. but it is what it is I guess.

I realized my mistake after I'd glued in the main gear struts. I was able to get the problem corrected, but it would be MUCH easier if I'd realized beforehand.

If you have a simple small saw and a drill, you can saw the lower struts at the line shown in the pic below, and swap sides. I used small wire as a bonding/reinforcing piece when I reassembled.

  3. I had two of these kits 20 years ago or so, got one maybe half finished, then I don't remember what happened. But this is my "first" Tamiya Corsair build.

So far, so good. Buttoning up the fuselage is about the 3 or 4 hour mark, not exactly sure. Interior surfaces primed with Mr.Surfacer 1500 (black), then thin coats of an interior green mix I used, again Mr. Color (roughly half zinc chromate yellow and a light interior green). Wash is Tamiya dark grey panel line wash. Seat belts are just painted masking tape.

With the engine, I sparyed Mr Color gloss black, the dumped most of the black paint, the added a couple of drops of Alclad II aluminum, then sprayed a couple of light spritzes.

My opinion:  Enjoy the lowered flaps.  The alternative is a trip down the rabbit hole of alterations.  The flap section on the folding portion of the wing is down; the corresponding flap section will be down on the inner half of the wing, too.  If retracted flaps are important buy a kit with retracted flaps; it looks like early days with this kit.

Yes, early stages. Thanks for the info, I'll leave them down.

If you can't source any Hasegawa gear legs, Eduard has a brass set of replacement legs for their kit. You may be able to use them on the Hasegawa, or even look to see if SAC has produced any white metal replacements which would be a direct copy of the Hasegawa gear.

I've checked SAC, they only have gear for the Eduard and HB kits.

Eduard by a LONG ways! The Hobby Boss kit is largely copied from the Trumpeter 1/32 scale model, complete with the serious shape and dimensional errors. Hobby Boss is not worth it if you're looking for a decent 1/48 Hellcat.

On another note, I don't get on ARC frequently these days so I didn't see your post but let me take a look- I might have a spare set of Hasegawa landing gear.

What is the difference between "weekend" and "profi-pack?"

That would be awesome, thank you!

And thanks for the input on kit selection.

  8. Howdy everyone. Any opinions on which 48th Hellcat is a better kit - Eduard or Hobby Boss?

I had just completed the decal phase of my Hasegawa F6F-3 when I discovered I'd misplaced the main landing gear struts. I've posted a "LF spares" in the classifieds, to no avail, and have resigned to the inevitable that those struts are simply GONE. (They were on small alligator clips, having been trimmed and painted.)

Thank you all for your time.
