Benner
I'm building the 1:48 Hasegawa D3A1; specifically the Midway boxing representing the plane from the Kaga. This would be a commander's aircraft (I've forgotten the actual term) given the 3 horizontal stripes on the fin. I'm noticing in looking for reference pictures that I almost never see the RDF antenna mounted on the underside of the plane. Was this typical of all planes? or would certain planes have the RDF mounted? ... wondering if I should leave it off.
sakai
Since you're talking about carrier based aircraft RDF was a must and as such had been installed by default. You can only expect aircraft from the land based unit having it removed.
Benner
That was what I thought, but even carrier based planes don't see to have them on. referring to this plane from the Battle of the Coral Sea, you can see there is no RDF housing installed on this plane. Reddit - https://i.redd.it/pjh4uskboai61.jpg I'm using this pic as basis for my Midway build, leaving the wing bomb racks on but empty.
