Eduard P-51B Royal Class

Recommended Posts

I just placed my order with SprueBrothers for the subject kit.  I was pretty sure that it didn't make sense to spend the extra money above the Eduard Overlord Dual Combo kit for the P-51B, but it looked like the Dual Combo kit sold out almost as fast as SprueBrothers got it in stock!  Plus, the  Eduard site shows the Royal Class kit already discontinued.   I'm sure I bit on the info that was designed to get people to buy, but at least I'm getting a few extra decal schemes, plus a bunch of resin, soon-to-be aftermarket items like seats, along with the planes.  Eduard got me as soon as I saw the P-51B planes with invasion stripes, as I seem to gravitate toward aircraft, WWII or heritage schemes, with those stripes.  So, not much else to say other than looking forward to seeing the B fuselages in addition to the many Eduard 'D' P-51s that I already have.  Fun!!

This B/C should be a wonderful kit, with a few less foibles than the D. I did not like on the D the tiny bottle nipple looking mg ports, which look nothing like the real thing. I think for that alone, and the cowl fasteners, and the sliding hood frame thickness, the Meng D will be a better companion to the Eduard B/Cs. However, all the Eduard kits are worth it for the decals alone, especially to peel them over metal finishes. Even on camo they are superb, and among the best I have ever used.

The Eduard D also looked really tall and tip toe on its oleos, as if totally empty or even off the ground, so I hope that gets moderated on the B... (In addition, the tailwheel wants to look sunk to maximum load or beyond, a the same time as the oleos are extended...) The lack of the big central cowl fasteners is a huge miss on the D, and unfortunately they went for the exact same cowl sprue split on the B, which is not promising...

Eduard is usually far above average for the Malcom hood depiction, but that moulding shape is a challenge, and still defies a proper optical look when closed. Most kits oversize them to portray them open as well... This one area where vacu-form is unavoidable.

Thanks for your comments.  I have completed 2 of the Eduard P-51D kits, and I guess I'm just not as aware of the details, as I'd not noticed the deficiencies you pointed out.  It so happens that I have the Meng P-51D which I have not yet built, maybe worth a comparison.  Still, I'm looking forward to the P-51B.

Curt,

I'm very tempted for the same reason. The mustang has always been one of my favorite kits, and I"m chomping at the bit to get the B/C. I bought the royal class Ds when they came out, so logically I should also get the Bs /s.

Mike, I just got my Royal Class kit 2 days ago, and it's really cool!  I'm loving all the different paint schemes that the decals will support, and a bunch of resin bits for details.  Eduard went through some effort to protect the 2 clear sprues, wrapped in sheet styrofoam and individually packaged.  Overall, pretty impressive!  My recommendation...don't wait. Get one!!

This is my fourth Royal Class kit.  I have the P-51D, the Tempest Mk. V and the Bf-109F RC kits, also.

Curt,

I'm finishing up my first eduard D and loving it so far. I just ordered and received the D-Day double B kit.

Cool, good for you, Mike.  i've had so manny modeling 'irons in the fire' that I've not  had a moment to actually consider building one or both P-51Bs.  You'll probably finish yours along before me! 😊  if so, I hope you post photos of your planes!
