spit VC, Beurling, Malta, Special Hobby 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'd like to start reporting about this build with a first batch of pictures

The SH kit, is a short run product, which requires some modelling skills, a lot of fitting work, but the result is worth the time spent on the project

Interior is good , no optional parts are required, everything is included in the kit

Assembly requires some plastic card here and there to position wings and fuselage properly, to avoid the use of lots of putty

DSC09401.jpg

It requires some tools and tape also, but nothing alarming

DSC09398.jpg

Surfacing is a matter of patience, but once the wing has been positionned as good as possible, it's still a reasonably faisable task

DSC09561.jpg

The precision work comes with reducing thickness of the trailing edge, this maybe a somewhat time consuming exercice, but vital to get the best out of this model, which has nice engraved surfaces and renders the spitfire design well

DSC09573.jpg

Painting: this is the nice side of the job

I mix all shades by myself with Revell Aquacolor, which is a nice up to date technology acrylic colours range

It is thinned up with water only, and sprays in thin smoothly in thin layers

under surfaces: azur blue

DSC09652.jpg

upper surfaces: middle stone

DSC09641.jpg

I like to cut out masks for the wings, which ables to reproduce patterns nicely

considering curved lines, for the fuselage, the paste is much easier to use

desert scheme completed

DSC09651.jpg

Now comes the "sexy" side of this business, trying to turn the desert scheme into a none specified but nevertheless famous and real Malta defender scheme

I sprayed water thinned azur blue in sort of haze technic, something like the haze paint on F5 recco lightnings

DSC09661.jpg

and now, sort of thing to discuss further:

some people have identified Malta schemes as two blue tones, light and dark Mediterranean blue

I applied a sepia filter to the picture, and something looking like two shades of blue came out of it

not bad isn't it ? I was quite taken by surprise myself

Colour pictures often tend to age this way, could be an explanation

That looks great Marc, I like what you have done with the colours.

Correct me if I am wrong but should the cannon not be positioned in the inside bay for a 'C' wing. Or is this some strange Malta refinement?

Hi

Yes, Malta spitfires are often pictured with the 20mm cannon in the outboard position, this explains the short version

A number of them took of from aircraft carriers and flew to Malta with four cannons , but only two remained on the aircraft afterwords

Similar thing happened with the machine guns, where the outboard ones were deleted

this looks none standard, which makes it an attractive modelling subject

the paintschemes are subject to interpretation, but nice to research and to experiment, glad that you like it

if there's enough time left, I would like to do a dark mediterranean blue aswell, probably a markVb

unfortunately there's not much reference available

I have the Osprey aircraft of the aces, spitfire V

and Spitfire a complete fighting history, Alfred Price

but this is good quality material to start with

cheers

Hi

some progress with the painting

the fin flash white and red are painted, the blue is cut out of the decal

DSC09665.jpg

after decals are applied, the model comes to live

the plane is dated summer 42, with the new fuselage roundels

markings are for 601 squadron, transfered to Egypt some weeks later

:)

Hi Marc,

as I`e seen your Spit live in progress, I could not imagine the result. And now I must confess it convince me! Like the aircraft on historical photos it is absolutly perfect taken.

The effect is great and with your buildings in background you`ve achieved a nice contrast between both objects.

The only criticism will be the missing flora. As a botany maniac I can not stand bak to comment this fact!!! :crying2:

I like this ensemble!!!
