I've recently discovered Alclad Lacquer for priming and love it. It takes a sanding very well.

In the "for what it's worth" category, I've started playing with creating my on decals. I located a font named Amarillo USAF from http://www.tlai.com that is supposed to follow the USAF markings spec. It works well with Photoshop.
