Mike Phillips
Started this one during the Helo group build, but didnt finish(got distracted with other stuff...) Anyway, here are some shots. Lots of Evergreen plastic and some bits from the "pizza rack" from the Cutting Edge Pave Low cockpit. I used some pictures of the Cobra Co. new MH-53J interior to kinda guide me for the bulkhead. The CC weapons set is gonna go in as soon as it comes in. Lower bulkhead area: Cockpit bulkhead. This was a plain, flat piece of plastic. Ceiling area. Not all of the hoses/lines etc are there, because there is a ton of them! Fuselage interiors: The two bulkhead pieces together: EDIT: Here's one more with the fuselage taped together, down the rear ramp. Sorry its so blurry... I plan on putting a few items on the walls on the inside, stretcher/jungle penetrator, etc to busy it up some. comments welcome Mike Edited August 21, 2006 by Mike Phillips

He built his in 1/72! I'm not THAT crazy! 1/48 has been hard enough. Mike

Mike Phillips
I think you did a great job so far.how big is your hh-53c Im using the old 1/48 Revell kit. It doesnt have the updated blades in it, thats why I decided to do a Vietnam era 53. Thanks for the comments guys. Mike
norbert
Hello Mike Looks good, it will also be good to see a vietnam era helo. what camo ? wasn't there a 3 tone ? Norbert
Mike Phillips
Norbert- It's gonna be the standard SEA camo pattern. I'm trying to find references to see if any had a black bottom instead of the standard lt. grey. Some of the VERY FEW pics I've been able to find seem to suggest a dark underside, but the grey doesnt really cover much of the bottom, so I cant tell. I'm starting to get AMS on this build. I made a water cooler to put in the interior today! It will never be seen, I just wanted one in there. Mike
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
I like it!
Mike Phillips
Here's the latest progress. The Cobra Co. weapons system is really nice. I had to create a third minigun from my CE Pave Hawk weapons. Those arent nearly as nice as the Cobra stuff. The CE cockpit is nice tho. Anyway, the pics, and a little smaller this time around Crew door on the right sidem with the minigun. The jungle penetrator (orange) was made from a 1/48 sidewinder and some strip. This is the homemade CE minigun and ammo chute with the Cobra ammo box. The black box was part of the CE pizza rack. Another view with the back of the cockpit bulkhead in there... looking toward the back. The litter is made from plastic rod and a piece of window screen. The left side minigun. The round green thing is a water cooler I made just for the hell of it! Once again, critiques/comments are welcome! Mike
Juanjo D.
Very nice work so far!!!
David Walker
I really like the detail work you've added. Hopefully a lot of it will be visible once the fuselage halves go together.
Mike Phillips
Juanjo- Thanks! Coming from you that means alot considiering you did the same thing in about half the size as mine! David- Chances are most of it wont be seen. This was one of those 'I wanna see if I can do it or not" type projects. I guess I have. If I do another one of these, I'll change alot of the things I've done on this kit. Mike
Mike Phillips
Update: Well, I've probably dry fit the fuselage and the interior a thousand times on this build without having too many gaps. Wouldnt you know it, when I finally put glue to the seams, I had a ton of gaps. I managed to get the top glued well without any gaps, but the bottom is gonna be another story. I managed to break both miniguns off their mounts too while wrestling the two fuselage halves together, but that might turn out ok because at least now I can mask those window openings a little bit easier. I'll try and post a few more pics when I get the bottom seem joined and cleaned up. Mike
Mike Phillips
Update: Well, its almost ready for the paint booth. I've got the fuselage closed up and the seams are pretty much gone. The one on the bottom was a bear, but I dont think it will be too noticeable. The rotors are together and painted and will go on last. The external fuel tanks came from an F-105 kit I had in the stash. They look more like the Vietnam era fuel tanks than the ones with the kit. Anyway, here's more pics. One major drama...I had the canopy on, masked and had the primer on. It was looking really nice and smooth. I looked on my desk and noticed the instrument panel laying there! Out with the knife to cut the canopy off so I could include this fairly important piece... This model is HUGE! I didnt really appreciate the size of a -53 until I built this kit. And with all the stuff I've crammed into it, the model itself is pretty heavy too. Once again, comments/critiques welcome Mike
Juanjo D.
Looking very nice so far! Perhaps I would added a bit more of contrast (lights/shadows) to the interior but overall is looking very nice! And yes, I can imagine is a big bug at 1/48 (its big even at 1/72 <_< ) Keep us posted please!
