These days, large scale (1/32 & 1/24). Master pattern maker for too many years. Ex-RAF and excruciatingly slow at model making!

Favourite a/c: P-61 Black Widow, Lightnings (both types), P-47/51/and Spitfires.

Currently working at BAE SYSTEMS and I am also a RAFVR(T) Officer.
1. Hello guys, Some early EMD release news for you. I have now taken delivery of the resin castings of the 1/32 Spitfire universal bomb carrier No.1 Mk.III from Grey Matter Figures. The castings are, as you would expect, first rate and flawless. I have also taken delivery of the MDC 500 lb bombs, which are equallygood. I have updated my website to show that it is now available for sale (http://eshop.eclipse...b-Carrier-MkIII), so if anyone wishes to purchase it, please register/log-on to my website with your details follow the buying instructions. The cost of the bomb carrier and 500 lb bomb is
2. Hello All, Just some advanced information for all you WW II prop fans out there. Here are some photographs of the completed master pattern parts for my next 1/32 scale Eclipse Model Design (EMD) release; the Spitfire Universal Bomb Carrier No.1 Mk.III:
3. Thales, All very interesting. I am currently building a 1/72 Matchbox J-29 Tunnan as a foiling experiment. I have previously built two other 1/72 scales models that have been successfully foiled using bog standard kitchen foil and Micro foil adhesive. I too have been searching for an alternative foil adhesive, but I have not tested anything the way you have. The new adhesive that I intend to experiment with is an aerosol adhesive manufactured by 3M. it is Scotchgrip 77, and is designed for this job - I shall let you all know how it all goes when I get to the foiling stage. Derek
4. Mini update. First of all, thank you to everyone who assisted me with the 20mm ammunition information, especially Russel camp (Ruzlkampf), who very kindly sent me his spare stock of various ammunition. Part of this hoard contained some 1/35 FLAK 43 shells, which I have cut down and modified into 1/32 20mm ammunition. I have been filling and refining the aerofoil shape of the wing, which I am now satisfied with. The next job shall be finishing off the various openings to thier finished size, and the start of scratch building the four Hispano V cannons and associated ammunition tanks. Here a
5. Hi Richard, Not at this point in time. Although the kit is nominally mine (Eclipse Model Design), the actual production and distribution of the kit shall be handled soley by Model Design Construction (MDC). The cost of the kit shall not be determined until it is ready for sale, however, I would expect the eventual cost of this kit to be somewhere near to the cost of MDC's current 1/32 Hawker Typhoon kit. I hope to have the master patterns completed before SMW 2008 at Telford in November. Derek
6. The wings are finally shaped in aerofoil section (just the wing tips to do). There is a little fine filling and sanding to do in a couple of places (you can see my 'superglue/baking powder filler mix as a yellowish blob or patch). I have chain drilled and roughly cut out the top surface of the wing, where the undercarriage bay is, and the upper cannon bay area on the left wing. Cheers Derek
7. Wing centre section now somewhere near to the correct shape. Next job (after a further light sanding) will be reparing blemishes/skin slits and damage, rouding off the leading edges in places, and opening out the cannon and flap bays again. Cheers Derek
8. John, Totally awesome build. The Lightning is probably my all time favourite British fighter - especially as I used to work on them at RAF Binbrook during the 70's and 80's. Watching what you have done thus far has been very inspirational for me, and yes, I do intend to build a large scale Lightning one day - even if I have to scratch build it! Regards Derek
9. Naza, Jack, Raptor, Thanks for the kind words guys. Brief update. I have been shaping the wings to the correct aerofoil shape. So far, I have roughly completed shaping both outer wing sections, with the centre section remaining to be done (note wing chord aerofoil shaped templates). Cheers Derek
10. Hi Guys, For those who may be interested, I am currently working up some master patterns for a 1/32 scale Hawker Tempest V resin kit. This shall be a collabrotive project between my own company (Eclipse Model Design and MDC (Model Design Construction)). The build istself has been in progress for some time now, and rather than copy and transfer many pictures across to ARC, here is a link to Large Scale Planes website, where you can see the build from the start up to date. I shall post future update pictures and information as it becomes available. For now, here are a couple of current pictures
11. Hi Guys, Just a little teaser for you here. I have just completed a set of 1/144th scale patterns of a Embrere EMB 190 for Welsh Models...I thought that I'd let you all have a sneak preview before they go for moulding. For further information on the availability of this kit, go to the Welsh Models website. Regards Derek
12. Naza, Thank you for your kind words, and thank you to Big Kev for linking my 1/32 Tempest build. There are quite a lot of pictures to post of the Tempest, so it may probably be best for me to post any future updates onto this site also. I am sure that with your help (and other fellow members here, such as Jorgen, etc), we should be able to exchange information. It will take me most of this year to complete the Tempest (I also have a set of Warbird Production 1/32 Spitfire F.21/22/24 wing conversion set, and my own 1/32 Revell Beaufighter interior detal set to complete first), but, hopefully,
