So here we were, all of my kids and I, on our small hobby farm in rural Illinois, watching the Space Shuttle land at Edwards AFB, live on Nasa's website. We don't get TV reception out here and are too cheap to pay for dish or cable...

How freaking cool.

I was a 10th grader at Desert HS at Edwards back in the '80's when the shuttle landed on the lake bed more routinely... we'd get out of class and take a bus over to watch it land. It was wonderful. I'm glad I can share some of that w/ my kids now thanks to modern technology.

NASA 946 Gulftream was up doing the recon landings and giving condition reports back to CapComm Weather. I was able to catch 5 radio transmissions of the shuttle: http://www.thenorthspin.com/temp/

Unfortunately they were too low to hear by the time he gave the 'runway in sight' call. There was no boom in the L.A. area, I think the track was more to the east. I noticed on TV there were three of the Fort Irwin Blackhawks and one of their new Lakota, all flying in a low slow line in the background while doing security and support. I thought about going out, but it's too hot. You can actually see better on TV anyway... Especially since they had a lot of footage of the recon aircraft and base the last couple times. There were two 38s sitting on the NASA ramp and what looked like the SOFIA 747.

I was down there yesterday with 3 other guy's that work for me helping to set up 4 KTM's from China Lake to track the Shuttle coming home. I couldn't make it back there today, but the the three that work for me said it was Spectacular being less than 500ft from the Runway recording the event. I was there for the last one in the early morning hours and that was a fantastic sight as well...

Cheers,

Larry.

Man, I NEVER get tired of watching launches and landings :coolio:.

I was all excited when I heard they were coming down at Edwards because I thought I might get to hear the sonic booms (I live about 3 hours or so northwest of there), but the darn thing came from the wrong direction :(.

The footage of Atlantis today I would say was especially good as it appeared there was no cloud in the sky to obscure the view and no haze either from what I could see. The sun angles were just perfect as well to light up the ole bird.

Launches I like better then landings, but both are exciting in their own way. The control of forces needed to bring the shuttle down to a specific point and come to a stop with no go around capability simply boggle the mind when one considers what is involved. When these old birds retire, I hope we won't spend too many years on lofting astronauts into space on capsules as they just don't have quite the same romantic quality to them that the shuttle has IMHO.
