Weird thing about the old Airfix Tomcat

Recommended Posts

I'm building another anti-AMS model: the old Airfix F-14, the one with the gorgeous Wolfpack boxart.

There seems to be a symmetry problem with the fins and the keels (the small underfuselage fins). I would have thought that these would be mirror-symmetrical but they aren't. The bulge at the base of the fins are on the same side, so are the air scoops on the keels. Is it a known issue of the Airfix kit or early Tomcats were supposed to have left/right interchangeable fins and keels ?

You didn't ask, but the Vulcan cannon fairing is also correct for the two very early block 65 aircraft represented on the decal sheet. It was more refined on later examples.

Pictures of those two aircraft have recently been uploaded on Airliners.net. As they may be useful, here are the links:

Please post some pics when you finish your model!

Cheers,

Jorge.

They're supposed to be that way. Check out some pics.

I did some documentation spelunking and I managed to find remnants of an In Action. You're right. Thanks.

Wilco. It's not worth making a WIP topic since I'll build it OOB but I'll show the end result. Along with the weird exhaust nozzles, the skinny Phoenix missiles and the non-operational weapons loadout. This kit is rather fun to build.
