Carmel Attard RNZAF Bristol Freighter Mk 31

Recommended Posts

The markings for the period Carmel stated circa 1969,

are incorrect for that time frame.

Prior to Nov/Dec 1970, RNZAF aircraft actually wore

"D" type roundels with a "Silver Fern" in the centre

of the red.

The "Red Kiwi" did not come into use till Nov/Dec 1970

This photo link should give you a good idea

Alan, while you are surely correct for an RNZAF Freighter in 1969, this thread from Wings over New Zealand (scroll nearly halfway down for 5911) contains quite a few pics of the Freighters in Vietnam style (SEAC?) 3 colour camo with the Kiwi roundels including 5911. I'm not saying this was correct for 1969 but certainly at some stage in the 70s 5911 & others did wear the kiwi roundels in this camo.

Steve.

Hi Steve

Yes, I know the Freighters wore the Kiwi roundel, I saw lots of them

when were we lived at Base Auckland (Whenuapai) in the early/mid 70's.

So for the Period after Nov/Dec 1970 the Kiwi roundel with SEA scheme

would be correct, but not for pre 1970, when the Fern on D type roundel was standard

(with/without SEA camo).

Alan
