xavi84
Here's the tomcat question of the day. The title says it all. Thanks Xavi
Darren Roberts
The first set of hexagonal-shaped stiffeners came about pretty early on. I'm not near my references, but I'd say they were being installed by the mid-70's. The later style L-shaped stiffeners started to appear in the very early 80's. Fast Eagle 107, the VF-41 jet that shot down the Libyan Sukhoi, had them, and that was '81. Hopefully someone can come along and give you exact time frames.
VFA-103guy
It's really not a matter of the year, but what block they started appearing. Block 95 F-14A's is when the t-stiffeners (as they're commonly referred to..so I've heard) started to appear, which would be about 78 or 79. If you watch the Final Countdown close enough, VF-84's jets had them and some of the VF-41 jets had the hexagonal ones Darren spoke of. VF-84 as one of the first tomcat units supporting the new block aircraft during that time.
