1/48 Eduard P-38H Lightning

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I started this build when I was on a different forum. I got busy and the kit got put away for a while. For the longest time I couldn't find it but eventually did and I'm going to finish it up here now that I've switched to ARC. This is one of the limited edition offerings from Eduard which includes the base kit (Academy? I think; never built the original), resin/PE cockpit, various add-on bits in resin/PE, decal sheet, and masks. Here are the highlights from before:

As you can see, the masks that came with the kit were very useful in marking out the green on the tails. For the most part, I got very little paint lifting which you can see just before the leading edge of the wing. The only exception is the left side outboard radiator intake which the mask took all of the green with it. I did not blot out the masks as I normally do with masking tape and probably should have done so.

A most impressive cockpit. The seat subassembly really is a vast improvement of the one in the base kit. The start to your very complex paint scheme is excellent. Looking forward to seeing it completed.

To echo what Joel W. has said, the cockpit is really impressive! Your paint scheme looks very challenging but, coming along nicely. Makes me want one of these kits. The reality is though I will have to enjoy your build as if it were mine as I have so many kits in the stash that while I would like one, I just can't justify it. I would have no idea of when I would get to it! Haha. Anyhow, great work and looking forward to your next installment!

Mark,

I feel the same way right before I buy another expensive kit. My stash just seams to grow no matter what I do. I build one, and it grows one. I sell one, and it grows one. Sometimes it grows one all on it's own. Too bad my bank accounts don't do that.

It's finally complete. I found a display box that would fit on amazon which you can see the base of in all the pics. The first pics are without the top, and then the last couple with the top. My painting scheme is MM acrylics for the colors seen previously. Then I applied a coat of MM gloss acryl and apply decals. I use micro-sol on all my decals to get them to really lay flat. The decals from Eduard were excellent and even the smallest letters are still legible. After decals were dry of micro-sol, I applied MM flat clear acryl with a drop of US Army/Marines Gulf (sort of a tan color) and a drop of light ghost gray in approximately 3cc of clear. This subdues the decals to make them look "worn in". After this, I wash with MM Enamel burnt umber. My technique is a little different than the apply-dry-wipe method. I coat large surfaces with thinned burnt umber then using a larger brush, wipe the wash in the direction of airflow. I keep doing this as it dries and it gives a nice texture to the paint. The excess wash that builds up at the trailing edges is wiped away with paper towel. The base itself is plastic but not sure what kind. I cut 100 grit sandpaper into pieces, bent the edges a little and glued them down with CA glue. The bend edges when put together give the look of cracked tarmac. Then I sprayed a custom mix dark gray (~gunship gray), highlighted with light ghost gray, then highlights with dark earth and Army/Marines gulf. The stains are watered down tire black MM acrylic. Thanks for looking, I'm very happy with how everything turned out. Questions welcome.

I need that scheme in my collection!

Someone else I know building the kit was having trouble with the cockpit parts so I shied away from this kit. Regretting it now as I can't find the decals.

Regards,
