11bee
Has anyone built the 1/48 Kinetic S-2 with the wings extended? I like the way the plane looks with those long wings extended but am concerned with the means to attach the outer wings. Kinetic gives you a small airfoil shaped plug-type fitting that is glued inside the two sections to join them together. My concern is that there isn't a lot of surface area on either side, worried that it won't be sufficient to support the long outer wing section. Anyone have firsthand experience with this? KursadA
I built mine with the wings extended. You're right that the "plug" provides a relatively small bonding area; considering how wide the wings are. But the fit in this area is pretty good, and the wings are sturdy enough if you do not handle the model by holding it from wingtips. I thought about drilling a hole in the plug part an reinforcing the area with metal rods, but ultimately decided it was not necessary for a model that would not be moved a lot. I agree, I have an Air Tanker that I am just finishing up and has the wings spread. I've had no problems with it.

Thanks guys, I think I'll give this a shot. It would be great if I could just slide the outer wings in place without glue, therefore making it easier to store the kit or transport. Regardless, it's good to know that this will work. Anyone interested in an unused Wolfpack wingfold set for this kit?

11bee
Just a heads up to anyone building this kit and planning on having the wings in the extended position - The kit outer wings have multiple small "tabs" present at the wingfold area. The instructions don't call this out, but these tabs need to be cut off to allow the wing sections to smoothly mate. As others have noted, althought there is not a great deal of surface area, the sections seem to match up nicely and with sufficient strength that I'm considering not gluing them in place so I can remove the outer wings for storage and (if I ever move or decide to enter the model in a show) transport. Thanks again for the help, John
jimm33
Hi all! Just as an aside on this question, at least Kinetic had the good sense to give you something to bond the inner and outer wing sections for the extended wing option. I am currently struggling with the Kitty Hawk F9F-8 kit which has no option for extended wings other than a butt join without any alignment keys of any kind. I have tried shims and now double plastic pins on each wing to come up with a secure join (with alignment of course!). KH if you're listening, you may still have time to do something similar to Kinetic for the Banshees!! Jim
