kr54
Back in the seventies, I had hobby knife. It was two stamped metal pieces, riveted together. It was roughly oval in cross section and flattened at one end. The handles pivoted on the rivet to replace blades. The blade had a slot that fit over a tab on one handle then fit into a slot on the other handle. I'd like to find another one, but have no idea what it's called. Anybody ever heard of one like this? Thanks for any help.
breadneck
Swann Morton? They have been around for a while. Did the blade retract into the handle? https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/hand-tools/marking-knives-for-joinery/ https://www.popularwoodworking.com/editors-blog/intro-to-marking-knives-part-three-great-inexpensive-all-around-knives/ Edited June 20, 2023 by breadneck
kr54
No, the handles swung open to release the blade. Thanks for responding.
karl h
there were stanley brand knives here in europe. they had a screw and not a rivet, but worked the same. cant find them online anymore though...

Well for starters, was the actual blade a conventional hobby blade? What size was it? The bigger blades are called #10 and the smaller ones are called #11. I do presume the blades were replaceable, yes? If not, that changes everything. Swann Morton has their own patent of attaching the blade to the handle but no swing afaik. I use ebay all the time when i look for something specific, so i would say ebay is your best bet if you really want to find what you are looking for.

kr54
Blade was regular #11. It had a roughly 1mm by 10 mm slot in the blade, Part of one handle was bent at 90 degrees, went through the slot and was captured by the other handle, Everything that I have seen on google and eBay has been either exacto, collet style or box cutter. Thanks for the replies.
Kaibutsu
Can you draw what it looked like and post it?

Unmodeller
After watching Paul Budzik’s video, I followed his advice and got a medical Bard-Parker #6 handle and a pack of Swann-Morton #25A surgical blades. The resulting knife turned out to be much superior to all hobby knives I have, such as X-Acto with #11. Note: These blades are of considerably better quality than your typical hobby shop ones. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FaX1Zx1JmAs You can find all of that on eBay.
