  1. Im going to go pick up the $7 Testors P-51 that I saw at the hobby shop when I picked up my Tamiya one. I can assemble it and have it primed and covered in alclad within 2 hours, and then I have a NMF experimental canvas to work with indefinitely!
  2. Makes sense - Good to know. I too still have much to learn with this NMF thing. I will post some pics of the 'stang if it comes out OK.
  3. I had not heard that! I'm glad to be hearing this now and not after my beautiful mustang ends up as a lawn dart! Future seems safe - why is it not recommended over alclad?
  4. I hear ya Jeff! I currently have a Tamiya P-51D on the workbench with a beautiful coat of aluminum on the airframe - it is my first NMF project and it looks awesome. I still need to mask off and spray a few individual panels a shade darker and such, but otherwise it is ready for Future and decals. After that it is just a matter of a panel line wash and the exhaust stains - hence this very enlightening thread!
  5. Going back to my original post, regarding glossy/matte finishes, your input has been immensely helpful. But one more specific question - what would be the best way to replicate exhaust stains over a natural metal finish (Alclad II) if a matte coat will ruin the effect and the thin paint mixture simply slides off of the clear?
  6. Thanks for the tip - it seems like a lot of folks prefer something other than the alclad gloss black. But does the primer coat have to be laquer? Or Would an Acrylic Black Gloss work as well?
  7. I'm imagining an F-15C painted in the all black Russian experimental paint scheme with Soviet markings - EVIL!
  8. The "Falcons of Russia" SU-27 scheme is BADASS! Count me in!
  9. That solves a big question for me - it makes sense, but I didn't know if it HAD to be sealed or not. Much thanks! Rob - do you airbrush the paint mixture on and accent with the MIG pigments? Do you brush them on over the paint?
  10. Just wondering if exhaust stains should be done on top of the clear coat and sealed by a matte finish, or on top of the matte itself since it seems like the fine texture would grab the paint/pigments/pastels better than a super smooth coat of future would. If so, what would you seal THAT with, another matte coat, nothing? Suggestions?
  11. Do you use the Tamiya Xtra Thin cement just like Tenax? Join the seams and brush it on?
  12. Great feedback - thankd everyone for the tips and excellent pictures. I'm looking forward to moving this thing along to completion!
  13. Good to know - Thanks for the tip. Wish I had known that before hand. But live and learn.
  14. I have put a ton of time and effort into the Tamiya p-51d kit and so far it is flawless - this is my first NMF build so I don't want to muck it up with my standard oil wash if it will smudge, eat through, stain or other wise tarnish the Alclad II aluminum finish. What is the best method to do a wash over Alclad? Does it need to be sealed with Acrylic Clear beforehand? Will a Matte coat ruin the effect of the Alclad? Please advise...
  15. Thanks for the feedback. I will look into using MM in the future
  16. Ok, working on my first NMF aircraft and sprayed an even coat of the Alclad Gloss black primer on the underside and left it to dry while I ate dinner and then worked out. Thinking its Lacquer and should have been more then dry after several hours, i went to flip it over to do the topside. Murphy's Law applied and I ended up with a nice fingerprint on my up-to-this-point flawless build of the venerable Tamiya P-51. My question is, is it possible to sand down this fingerprint and re-spray the area with more black gloss, or should I strip and start over? I know that NMFs are very tricky. Much tha
  17. Post a pic of the "goofs" - there are a lot of really talented people on here who got that way by making TONS of goofs! I'm sure someone could give you helpful tips to cleaning them up, especially since this sounds like an important project. I look forward to seeing it!
  18. According to the regulations when I got out (2009), Officially, the woodland cammies were to be worn stateside, while in garrison, year round. However, Individual Unit commanders are authorized to determine their unit to wear the desert cammies some or part of the year, the only stipulation being that every member of that unit had to comply. For example in the summer months, the Leathernecks at MCAS Yuma would be wearing desert cammies, while the boys over at 2nd division at Camp Lejune, N.C. would be in woodlands. In a field/training environment, the commander would determine the appropriate
  19. Absolutely stunning photo gallery - thanks so much for sharing this!
  20. Excellent link to the other thread - Sorry to be repetitive. BTW, the exhaust stain you produced looks fantastic! I am really looking forward to experimenting. If it comes out halfway decent, I will post some pics. Thanks again!
  21. Very cool website Gray - I'm going to spend some time this weekend checking it out in depth. Thanks for the excellent link.
  22. Hello all - I have seen a number of folks that take digital pictures of their completed models and insert a digital background, such as a muddy WWII airstrip or hangars. This is a great way to display our work and can make a friend ask themselves if it is a photo of a real aircraft or a model! I have Photoshop at home and have searched the internet for digital background images to no avail. Does anyone have any of these backgrounds that they can share or direct me to a site where I can find and download them? Much appreciated!
